My guess is the PSP2 will get murdered first, when you look at it, Sony was trying to go make a multimedia machine out of it and Apple product do a much better job than Sony for that.( your Iphone, is a phone, an internet surfing machine, a book and now a gaming portable..)

Nintendo might resist better thanks to the strength of it's first party titles but it is going to be hard to retain the more casual users of cooking mama for example...

I agree, Sony has to really step their game up - they look like they will with Sony Online Service, Qriocity Movie streaming service, Music, ebooks integrated on SOS etc, the PSP, at the bare minimum, must have all the features we've come to expect from today's smarphones. Nintendo needs infrastructure as it's way behind in there. I'm pretty sure the big N is betting on 3D being a big thing and a huge selling point on 3DS though.

You could combine all 50,000 games together and still not have the quality of a single psp or DS game.

You know you own some games that are on the Iphone? RE4, Myst. Probably more, cant be bothered checking all of them.

Sure, the majority of those 50 000 games are rubbish. But the Iphone has a lot of good games

You don't buy an Iphone to game.
You buy it as a phone and internet surfing portable and then you discover gaming on it thats why the price comparison is meaningless...

The Iphone is a phone that does gaming on top for almost free, if you look at it that way the price comparison isn't so bad anymore...

The people they will mostly attract are those new or coming back to gaming, the same way Nintendo did with the Wii.

Apple won't steal current DS and PSP customers, they will steal the future ones...

In that sense they are not so much competing with the DS as with the successor of the DS...

^This is basically how it will go down. I'm not going to sell my DS/PSP just because I get an iPad or buy games. However, I know that the iPad/Pod will take up more of my time. More of my time that could be spent on the DS/PSP. Pretty soon I won't even bring my DS/PSP because the iPad/Pod is good enough to entertain me.

That's a possibility, but people who live in US, well, too US-centric. Look abroad. Nintendo has an experience dealing with gaming on mobile phones in Japan where it's massive and keeping handheld business relevant. Back in 2000-2001 in pre-GBA days, gaming media was too much concerned with rising tech specs of mobile phones, predicting that handheld consoles would vanish unable to compete with affordable technology that sells in millions and have very cheap or even free games available online and comparable in quality with those on Game Boy. DS was partially an answer to those claims and threats from below as wel as threat from above - PSP.

Me thinks Apple is not competing with DS/PSP.

Why, you ask?

Touch only controls are fun but are terrible for FPS and many other genres.

N.O.V.A and Modern Combat: Sandstorm say hi! those two are FPS's and have fantastic touch controls.

Touch controls are superb if done well, I have never had issues with touch controls, and most games are much much better with touch controls, GTA chinatown wars iphone/touch --> PSP version due to touch controls.

No one is buying Iphone because of its gaming capabilities. But most people bought PSP and NDS with gaming in their mind.

We'll have to wait and see what impact Apple has on the gaming industry. My guess at the moment is not much.

Actually, Apple will have a huge impact on the gaming industry. They will completely change the publishing/distribution of games, and the change is already happening and visible. Of course, they are not alone in this: pretty much the same model has existed on the PC for many years.

@diglet

OpenFeint and others will be the losers, although the Game Center is still a developer preview and will not be released for quite some time. But I believe Apple will make it so easy to implement it for devs that the other platforms will have a hard time competing. OpenFeint, for example, is not hard to integrate into your game but it has a number of annoying characteristics and design decisions. Still, I use it currently, and perhaps they can gather enough mass before Game Center is launched to stay in the game.

lol so now the iPhone/iPad is a gaming system???
Lol does Apple really think people buy the iPhone just to play games???
