Or... those numbers are US market only. Nokia was ignored because they have no real presence in the North American smartphone market.

And Apple's staggering 0.1% marketshare drop isn't much cause for concern. Most of Apple's growth shows up around June, because that's when the new software and hardware shows up.

Yeah but this year they've got Android to worry about, plenty of android tablets and really epic android phones coming (Going to pick me up an HTC incredible soon)

LMAO, epic and android do not mix, the android os is absolute crap at this time, I returned my nexus one, I hated it, and 98% of the apps on the android marketplace isn't worth having, if they keep improving it maybe in a year it will be half decent but at the moment its a joke, web os and apple os3 (and soon os4) are much much much better.

Android has less than 3% of the market in the UK and EU at the moment, Apple has 52%, more than the rest combined (RIM isn't very big outside the U.S), Android phone also don't hae that hype about them, everyone owns iphones and palm pre's here, they are the hot gadgets right now, no one I know has an android phone or has ever talked about one.

Around the Network

Palm pre is suddenly hot in europe? Crazy news

I agree though that android future is not THAT certain. The consortium behind it reminds me very much of symbian. The problem with symbian is that even though it's open source now and free to use, 2nd tier manufacturers with few exceptions are afraid of it because nokia is so dominating the market that basically its stigma over the platform is too strong. Android crowd is like symbian in the very beginning, it is _opportunity_ to all of them. Once someone (likely, samsung or htc) really stands up above the rest, loosers will be leaving the party. This, and also androids are becoming very fragmented, too.

As for apple, they are huge success, but they will not have hegemony over phone market simply because:
1) single device won't fit many tastes, and i don't think apple will start to build a product line ever, and also they're not willing to play with materials or design of their phones too much, remember that phones are driven by fashion in strong manner, some people are not buying the iphone just because they're tired of it and "everyone else is having it"
2) looks like operators are getting less happy with apple's way of taking the most of revenue, it appears they are seeking other opportunities and other partners to monetize upon data traffic and digital content. In fact, bada platform was said to have birth due to demands of mobile operators, so this speaks for itself.
3) apples will always be rather expensive products having stigma of "being overpriced", and i'm talking about public reception not the actual value behind iphone or whatsoever
