Kojima: Console will be dead “in the near future”

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Kojima: Console will be dead “in the near future”

Speaking at this morning’s press conference for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in Japan, Hideo Kojima has said the consoles will be phased out “in the near future”.

The MGS creator and head of Kojima Productions said that players should have their experiences “on the go”.

“In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform,” said Kojima. “Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”

But SCEJ boss Hiroshi Kawano said that while he respects what Kojima said, he did add it was “a bold prediction”.

We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge,” he said.

Earlier this morning, the developer announced a new collaboration with Capcom to include a bonus mode in MGS: Peace Walker that sees Monster Hunter included in the game.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker releases on April 29 in Japan, June 11 in the US and June 18 in the UK for PSP.

The only current console project in developer at Kojima Productions is Metal Gear Solid: Rising for PS3 and 360, which may or may not get a re-reveal this month.

Haven't we heard that credit cards would replace cash?

Or that videophones would replace telephones?

Or mobile phones would destroy handhelds?

Or that the NES is a fad and video games would only exist on computers?

Did any of these happen? No.

Consoles will continue to exist for a long time.

He means that he believes handheld gaming will be dominant

Correct game consoles should be around for along time to come.

By "in the near future" I think he means within the next 30-50 years, which by then he may be right. Within the next 10-20 years I see consoles and handhelds coexisting until the technology exists to where a handheld can act as a console (output to TV in HD, support controllers connecting to it) at home while still being a handheld on the go.

Would not be to suprising to me. I can easly see EA, Activision, Take 2, Rockstar, Capcom, Konomi, and more 3rd parties getting together and fighting for a standard. The costs of development in the next hardware cycle will be out of controll, if they have to build 3 versions of the same game. Plus the tech to make a great console will be extreamly easy for any electronics company to produce. Third parties could easly band together with Samsung, Phillips, Toshiba, and LG making a standardized game platform like DVD or Blu-ray for movies. If this was to happen, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo would have no choice but to join in.

He is wrong, if he was talking about Japan only, that maybe would've been right, since Japanese pepole have far less time than westerners and smaller homes (thus not allowing pepole to sit together and play), in order for Japanese to play with others they gather up with others with their handheld devices.

However, consoles will still be dominant in the west.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

So he makes console games for over 20 years, then he makes one single handheld game, and all of a sudden handheld gaming is the future and consoles will be phased out? I thought this guy made games too powerful for the PS3, but I guess now the PS3 is dying and the PSP is the future.
