Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 Sales in Uk down 82% week 2....

from:http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23977

Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent.

Chart Track data is gathered from 7000 UK retail outlets representing 90 per cent of the software market, including GAME, Gamestation, Play.com, Asda and HMV.

A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent."

Last week, Chart Track revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 165,000 units in the first two days following the launch, making it the fastest-selling home console in the UK.

"We publish the first week figures because there's such a clamour for them that we can't keep it a secret," said the spokesperson.

This week's software charts revealed that sales of the top two PlayStation 3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, had dropped by over 60 per cent.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe declined to comment.

so 165 thousand week1 (or is that weekend...shrug)

29.7 thousand week 2

edit: i can do math,, 100-82 is NOT 17....grumble

WOW, I did not think it would drop that fast!

I guess they went from record high to record low.

What did you expect? Another 100k? Man, get real. Almost 30k a week is still very respective number as for single european country.

Surprised? I thought it was completely predictable. All the people that wanted a PS3 purchased it. Demand was satisfied.

fixed my math error, and

kber...it is when you consider Japan's first 4 weeks

week1 87500

 week 2 44000 50% drop

week 3 36000 another 18% drop

 week 4 32000 11% drop

week 5 49500

what this shows is... most people that wanted a ps3 got it first weekend on britain  now to see if rest of europe has a similar drop...

and see what the drop-if there is one- is  NEXT week.. i forsee that ps3 will be following the japan/usa trend of sales, which is not a good thing for the ps3 to be doing if they EVER want to catch the 360 or wii

If it's not an issue of selling out of hardware, then I see this as a bad sign. It seems to mean demand is met. And demand should not be met on week two, granted week one was huge. I assume it will keep droping over the next two weeks and then stablize. Then you have to compare it to the 360 and Wii. What were the 360 and Wii sales that week? That's the big question.

I was thinking maybe a 30% drop in week 2 not 82% then I thought it would get into whatever sales groove it was going to have.

Do not compare realase sales of UK with Japan. There is no comparison. Small drops in Japan ware a result of stock issues. Sales will drop next week too. It's not a big deal. I think regular sales will be around very solid 12k - 15k a week.

Sorry, you don't know what you are talking about. 30% ? 115k? Please.

30k for week 2 isn't bad unless week 3 sees another 80% drop or something like that.  It would seem the UK's yearly average PS2 purchasing was 40k a week initially and fell to 20k last year.  So if it stays at 30k it's no big deal for Sony.  We'll have to wait and see what happens week 3, & 4, & 5, &...,.  As someone who doesn't much care for Sony or the PS3 I suppose I should mention the dark lining in the cloud would be that week 2 matches the sharp drop off seen elsewhere after launch (even if it's for entirely predictable reasons).  So the PS3 is being true to form in the 2 weeks we have thus far.
