Forums - Sony Discussion - The pressure of the trophy

I'm not too obsessed with achievements/trophies/etc. I try to go for them sure. But if I really have to go out of my way to get an achievement or its too tedious, I don't bother. Video games are played for fun. If you aren't having fun, you are missing the point. Achievements/trophies can be fun. But if they are tedious or you don't feel like replaying that game again, then why force yourself? It's not the end of the world if your trophy count or completion percentage isn't that great. I see no point in forcing yourself to get 100%. I play until I have my fill usually (though I might get some extra achievements if they aren't too much trouble).

This fit me also ;).

The thing is, if someone do it, probably means that the gamer score for completing trophies/achievements is more important or more fun than the time plays do gather them. Its alright, no problem there, we all have different tastes. But if you sincerely think that for you the gamerscore is not worth the time and effort to acquire trophies/achievements you should strongly consider not bothering with them. The only thing you can do at the moment is work on yourself to find a way to be satisfy with your gaming method.

This is exactly what I will try to do. In fact, I don't have the time to collect all trophies as I have to learn plenty of things for school.

I love trophies, but I've only tried to go for the platinum if it's pretty easy like Uncharted and God of war. The only game that ended up killing a lot of my time was GTA 4, boy are the trophies hard in this one, but I'm still happy since the game is brilliant and fun to play.

The only thing I'm ashamed of though is the fact that I played through Terminator Salvation for its trophies, but what's surprising is that I actually liked the game lol.

Oh and OP, your english is good so don't worry about that.

Great to hear that, good decision man!

Why are you ashamed of having done that? Is it important for you to have as many trophies as possible? Please don't take the last sentence as an accusation or anything like that. I just want it to know and thanks for the compliment :)

I experienced this pressure of needing to have those 100 % long before the introduction of achievements. That's what makes you play something repetitive and tedious like the Endurance level in Rogue Leader. Shooting the same waves of TIE fighters for 200 minutes straight isn't fun, but it gives you enough time to think about why you are doing it in the first place.

Truly great games don't need anything like achievements, you play them for years because they are entertaining. You don't need an artificial goal set by the developers, like collecting random items that have really nothing to do with the actual game.

If the only reason you keep playing a game is that you want those 100 %, then that's usually a sign that it isn't really a good game in the first place. And once you are done, it's likely that you never touch it again.

Play games that you enjoy, time is too valuable to waste it on titles that feel like work.

Very well written. I guess you are right. Just like you said, time is too valuable to be spent on something that is supposed to be fun and not work .

I can't explain why, but when I play a game with no trophy support, it feels like I'm just wasting my time.

They do encourage you to play the game in different ways, but they've ruined my enjoyment of any non-trophy games.

The dude abides

I only buy trophy games.

I have to respectfully disagree.

Case in point, I think Bayonetta is a fantastic game. I love to play it, however, I have beaten it and I mostly play games for the story. This means I have no real reason to play it after the story wraps up. I still continue to play because I would like to get 100% on it. Now, that doesnt mean it wasnt a really good game simply because Im only playing to "complete" it. I hope I am explaining this right.

In short, Im just saying that playing a game in pursuit of trophies/achievements only doesnt mean the game isnt good. Not in all cases anyway. Stuff like Avatar and Terminator Salvation, yeah probably. But like I said earlier, I still play RB2 and DJ Hero in pursuit of trophies, and I find them both really entertaining.

I am a gamer. Not a fanboy, not a troll, a gamer. So when you dont like what I have to say, remember this fact.

I guess you can say that. It was pretty hard to resist, I got it for $8 and managed to get 11 GOLD trophies and a platinum from it lol. But you know what? I don't need to be ashamed bec I actually liked and enjoyed the game. I even replayed it with my bro (splitscreen) after platinuming (that's a verb ???) it.
