Forums - Sony Discussion - The pressure of the trophy

Why did Sony establish trophies into every new game? Why is it nowadays a must-have for every available game and why are some gamers not buying games which do not support trophies (Valkyria Chronicles is unfortunately one of them).  It’s a pity to see some games being left on the shelves or read comments like “I’m not buying this since it doesn’t have any trophies”. The trophy system is probably an answer to Microsoft’s achievement system and in times where producing games is expensive as never before and playing times get sometimes ridiculously short, these kind of “little successes” are a great opportunity to make the player complete the game exhaustively. I know that it’s not an obligation to get Platinum in every single game or to replay a game three to four times in a row. Nevertheless, I feel a kind of pressure to have 100% in a game. I want everything to be done, otherwise it doesn’t feel “right”. I want to get that platinum and gold trophy, no matter how much time it costs and I even put up with countless hours of pure frustration or boredom. What even worse is, that if I look at my trophy profile, I see some games with only 1%, 12% etc. and I am not really able to tell you why, but it’s annoying me to know, that I stopped playing some games although I didn’t like them. Why isn’t there a function to ban some trophies out of your profile or delete the trophy installing?  Am I the only one who has this bizarre behavior or do trophies even affect your choice of buying certain games or not?  I for one have to admit, that I wanted to play Star Ocean: The Last Hope but the fact that gaining its trophies is partly that hard, that you have to sacrifice a large amount of free time only to get some bronze trophies, discouraged me pretty much. It’s a love-hate relationship between that virtual, pathetic prove of an insignificant “success” and the addiction to collect them all. Sometimes, I would like to see them being abolished from every game and sometimes, it makes indeed even fun to hunt them. Excuse me for my limited ability to express my thoughts in English, but I guess you know for sure what I am trying to tell you.

Owners of the Xbox360 or other consoles are also free to discuss that phenomenon or express their own point of view since this mechanic isn’t only to be found at the PS3 of course. I'm currently hunting for trophies in Final Fantasy XIII by the way and grinding is not that much fun but simultaneously it is. Help?!

Because the fans asked for it and Sony knew that Achievements was a factor in people deciding to buy games.

be wary of paragraphing.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

trophies for me are just something that i try to do while playing the game, i don't find myself replaying a game just to get a trophy i didn't get.

I live for the burn...and the sting of pleasure...
I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun...

I wont lie, I am a trophy whore. I dont buy games based on it (I have VC for example,) but I do find myself striving for those Plat trophies almost endlessly. I love it though, cause it makes me play games longer than I would in the past. Rock Band 2 and DJ Hero are 2 good examples of games i would have put down if not for the elusive platinum.

I am a gamer. Not a fanboy, not a troll, a gamer. So when you dont like what I have to say, remember this fact.

I grinded my way to FF13 plat today, I know exactly what you mean *sigh* at the end that "treasure hunter" trophy was a complete shore, especially because only adamans/guis drop worthwhile items

Trying to kill adamans by "Death" is such a pain. It took me about 10 minutes to kill only one and all I got was 80000 CP but NO ITEM. -.-

I know just what you mean, After reading a article about how Microsoft hired some sociologist to create achievements I've started to hate how they can affect your behaviour when playing games. I would want a opt-out or even just a hide notification.

No one can deny that the "reward" of an achievement or trophy doesn't feel nice, and that one of the first things you do with a game is look at the list of them to see which ones to aim for. When Trophies first came out I enjoyed super-stardust HD and it made me play it like I hadn't before, or the achievement for no shooting in mirrors edge.

However achievements often have a bad effect too, I wonder how many people got all of the flags in Assassin's creed 1 on the PS3, I'm imagining not many, how many on the X360? You got nothing much an achievement...

I've not been effected by the "must have" I recently bought eternal sonata on the PS3, however it did come down to extra content vs achievements... It should just be a straight choice. Although price did feature as well. But I have a friend that no won't buy/play anything that doesn't have achievements and buys many poor games just for easy ones.

Wow, that sounds macabre.

Your point is a good example for how absurd it is to spend many hours only to hear that *bling*.

I'm not too obsessed with achievements/trophies/etc. I try to go for them sure. But if I really have to go out of my way to get an achievement or its too tedious, I don't bother. Video games are played for fun. If you aren't having fun, you are missing the point. Achievements/trophies can be fun. But if they are tedious or you don't feel like replaying that game again, then why force yourself? It's not the end of the world if your trophy count or completion percentage isn't that great. I see no point in forcing yourself to get 100%. I play until I have my fill usually (though I might get some extra achievements if they aren't too much trouble).

The thing is, if someone do it, probably means that the gamer score for completing trophies/achievements is more important or more fun than the time plays do gather them. Its alright, no problem there, we all have different tastes. But if you sincerely think that for you the gamerscore is not worth the time and effort to acquire trophies/achievements you should strongly consider not bothering with them. The only thing you can do at the moment is work on yourself to find a way to be satisfy with your gaming method.
