Forums - Sony Discussion - How to bypass PS3 firmware 3.21 and connect to PSN!

Oh, I very much do. However the victims also have the right to imprison me. However, as far as what I can do with the PS3, as far as sony is concerned, is anything.

I think you need to brush up on legalities a little more. Just because you CAN do that doesn't mean you have the right to. I CAN go out and rape my once consenting ex girlfriend but is it my right to do it? FUCK NO! And actually if Sony gave you the tools and means to break the law and didn't protect themselves in some cases they could be tied to illegal activities and punished. Ex: Gun manufacturers being charged with murder because their gun was used. Yes, this most likely wont hold up in court but it has been attempted and only reason it isn't held up in court is because firearms are protected in the constitution and its really a grey area when it comes to that kind of stuff. Ex: Tabacco companies being sued because their product killed someone... It has been attempted.

it doesnt matter if you use it to hack or pirate, fact is there are people out there that DO use it for those purposes...Its been proving...its a very very lengthy work around but its still costing devs money...even if its only 1 copy.

You should turn off your computer. You know people use those to hack things.

Terrible analogy. Sony isn't forcing people to turn off their ps3's and computers securities are updated all the time just like Sony just did.

Perhaps then if he had said "disconnect your computer from the internet." As you cannot access PSN without update and removal of the feature. Still not a great analogy but I think it gets his point across.

Regardless, I think it's quite absurd how people are behaving over this, as if they're on some sort of crusade.

@bolded: True. However, when is it that an actual feature is removed as a result of security updates (genuine question, I have no idea... perhaps there is the subtle one here and there)?

I am not going to lock this thread.

with the new firmware Sony surely patched in new keys for the hypervisor (geohot said it was a complex structure of several keys that made up new keys and he expected to be a main key in there he hasn't gotten hold of) and because the hack at this point seems to need linux to work it has just gotten more difficult to attack the hypervisor

Yes, I understood this, and it will slow the work of pirates, but what they have in their hands now is already enough to do mods that run pirated single player (and local, not online, multiplayer) games (but to use thiese early mods, a way to switch to and from a regular firmware would be necessary to access PSN and play online multiplayer games). When Geohot or anybody else manage to deceive the controls on firmware genuinity, they'll be able to dump updates and look for other vulnerabilities or check which ones of those they already know have been patched and which not instead. Anyhow, blaming either Linux or Geohot or anybody else in particular is conceptually wrong: it's a well known principle of informatic security that if the attacker can gain physical access to HW, a  breach is only matter of time. Here anybody can have access to HW. Only making gaming HW physically inaccessible to users (i.e. selling them dumb terminals instead of consoles able to autonomously run games) could solve this particular issue, but it wouldn't solve every problem anyway.

See that's what I call a shitty analogy. What exactly is the hardware that you are using in said felony? See, when I buy a knife, I can do whatever I want with it. I have the right to keep it, use it, and to make it laser sharp. If I want to use it to stab people, then people should stop me, and not the knife, from stabbing someone. If you don't understand this analogy with the simplests of hardware then I won't bother arguing with you because the rock outside will see more reason.

I also don't even see how you can bring up a point, defeat it completely in the next sentence, and still think it's a point in your case.

I hope the next exploit deals with the Printer settings in the Settings section of the menu... I still don't get why that's there...

I support everything that mirgro guy said in this thread so far. Boo @ most of the others.

@mirgro

you have one very odd moral compass.

As for what you can do can do with the things you purchase, like your ps3. Look to your user license agreement.

PLEASE READ THIS SYSTEM SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT CAREFULLY TO UNDERSTAND YOUR RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS.

ACCESS TO OR USE OF THE SYSTEM SOFTWARE IN THE SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC. ("SCE")'S PlayStation®3 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM UNIT ("PS3™ system") IS EXPRESSLY CONDITIONED UPON ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT.

This Agreement is a contract with SCE. This Agreement applies to any system software or firmware included in the PS3™ system, and any patches, updates, upgrades, or new versions of the system software or firmware provided to or made available for your PS3™ system through any SCE service or online network, SCE website or PS3™ system game disc (software is collectively, "System Software").

As for what you can do with it, it says that in there too!

2. RESTRICTIONS

You may not lease, rent, sublicense, publish, modify, adapt, or translate any portion of the System Software. To the fullest extent permitted by law, you may not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any portion of the System Software, or create any derivative works, or otherwise attempt to create System Software source code from its object code. You may not (i) use any unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software in connection with the System Software, including use of tools to bypass, disable, or circumvent any encryption, security, or authentication mechanism for the PS3™ system; (ii) violate any laws, regulations or statutes, or rights of SCE, its affiliated companies, or third parties in connection with your access to or use of the System Software, including the access, use, or distribution of any software or hardware that you know or should have known to be infringing or pirated; (iii) use any hardware or software to cause the System Software to accept or use unauthorized, illegal, or pirated software or hardware; (iv) obtain the System Software in any manner other than through SCE's authorized distribution methods; or (v) exploit the System Software in any manner other than to use it in your PS3™ system in accordance with the accompanying documentation and with authorized software or hardware, including use of the System Software to design, develop, update, or distribute unauthorized software or hardware for use in connection with the PS3™ system for any reason. Without limiting the scope of SCE's remedies, any violation of these restrictions will void the PS3™ system's warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from SCE or its affiliated companies.

So whether you like it or not you do not own 100% of your ps3. Now whether you choose to ignore that fact is up to you.

And they have every right to protect their intrests just like you would if you were in their shoes.
