lol you think i don't really know about Linux ?

@Red

is everything you read on the forums insulting to you?

To answer your first question try reading my post again.  It quite clearly states you know nothing about this hack, nothing more or less.  I couldn't care less if you run a cluster of a 1000 Linux machines in your basement as a heating replacement solution, you know nothing about this hack except what you've read from other uninformed users on this and other sites.

A insult can be implied by more than just words, starting a post by saying "you seem to not get it at all..." is pretty rude especially in the OP's thread, I'm sorry you have such poor manners to not understand this.

I think I'm about done talking to you but feel free to reply if you need to, if you have no interest in the topic of this thread, how about you leave and stop going off topic.  That applies to everyone else in here on a crusade for Sony, if the mods feel this is inapporpriate then they can lock the thread, its not your place to make that call although you have every right to report the thread.

@bolded

wow and you accuse ME for insulting? wtf with your attitude? , go ahead then insult me more, i don't get all worked  up by some random people on the internet

i told him he just didn't get why Sony removed it and explained it to him.

and lol @ Red , you really think i give a rat ass about Sony ? this will effect the developers not sony, you are very shallow to think everyone is black or white.

exactly:

and another point is

I think many see this as a slap in the face to the consumer:

but which would you rather have: the loss of linux or gamer's on PSN with Mod chipped PS3's

because as it stand's now that's what would have happened if Sony kept INSTALL OTHER OS on the PS3, yes it could still happen but no sense making it easier for the Hacker's to do it!

example:

It is quite possible someone will package this attack into a modchip since the glitch, while somewhat narrow, does not need to be very precisely timed. With a microcontroller and a little analog circuitry for the pulse, this could be quite reliable. However, it is more likely that a software bug will be found after reverse-engineering the dumped hypervisor and that is what will be deployed for use by the masses.

Sony appears to have done a great job with the security of the PS3. It all hangs together well, with no obvious weak points. However, the low level access given to guest OS kernels means that any bug in the hypervisor is likely to be accessible to attacker code due to the broad API it offers. One simple fix would be to read back the state of each mapping after changing it. If the write failed for some reason, the hypervisor would see this and halt.

It will be interesting to see how Sony responds with future updates to prevent this kind of attack.

I would rather have no Linux install than to have Mod Chipped PS3's on PSN

Then Sony shouldn't have put that feature in PS3 since the beginning, as hackers will only have to avoid patching and they'll be able to keep on working on it. BTW, as every console now has a remotely updatable firmware, they cannot be 100% hack-proof, even without OtherOS support.

while true Sony put linux in the PS2 like they did for the PS3 to promote the use of  Linux . the fact that PEOPLE are using the LinuxOS to bypass the security to do software dump's is quite telling. Sony released the playstation 3 with that function with good faith to hope to avoid this type of abuse, and some hacker's decided to abuse it anyway.

this is the result of it. GeoHot decided to release the exploit to the internet when he knew there would be a chance that Sony would do something about it. the PSP has shown what has happened with software dump's. andyet Geohot said have fun with "hypervisor dump's" he could care less who it would have effected.

From reading the thread for each 'hack', it doesn't seem to work very well, ie only one guy has got it to work in recently. And that most likely is because Sony hasn't introduced the 'if firmware version

@joeorc
Why do you keep posting the same thing over and over in all threads? All this shows that the removal of 'Other OS' at this time makes no sense, won't stop the hacking of PS3 and it will not be needed to use any exploits once they are discovered.

On this issue you're not even debating anything, you're telling everyone else they're wrong.  That seems pretty much black and white to me.  Me explaining your complete lack of knowledge on a subject your preaching to others about is not an insult, I wouldn't waste my time getting banned over someone like yourself.  I see despite you having zero interest in the topic though you had to post off topic yet again, just like many others in here.

I'll make it easy for everyone to read again, if you don't like the OP then fine, leave the thread and move on, its not about whats right or wrong in this one, there is two other threads you can troll in for that.

But this time he's right. Once discovered, one way or the other, Linux or not, the working, not just concept, exploits won't use Linux at all to run pirated games, as games run under Sony's proprietary OS, not under Linux. BTW Linux has limited access compared to Sony OS and games, to HW and SW features, so, even if a working hack were found, to even hope to run PS3 games under Linux, some rewriting of kernel, drivers and libraries would be needed and an emulation layer should be added. How long did it take to make previous consoles acceptably working emulators?
