Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Michael Pachter Responds! Thoughts on the Wii Vitality Sensor

I'm talking since the wii has been launched why are you talking about 2009 then?

also Yes I'm sure that predicting Wii HD is not part of his job because that's just speculating of the existence of one product not about how well it will sell which is the important part. On the other hand if Wii HD was finally announced that will certainly be part of his job to predict how well it will sell.

Im talking about 2009 since that has been when Pachter has been down on nintendo. As for the success of the wii, yeah he got it wrong. But then did so did pretty much every other analyst.  Im not trying to say he has a perfect record or something. I'm just trying to say that we don't know how good of an analyst he is from posts he makes on neogaf or emails he sends to internet blogs.

What i'm arguing against is people that say he should be fired because he doesnt think the VS will have much impact on wii hardware, or the people that think Pachter is somehow an wii troll or HD fanboy that hates nintnedo wants to see them fail. neither of those things make any sense. His analysis of nintendo's 2009 and the media reaction is the best one I saw

It all depends on execution. Something like the Vitality Sensor could really shatter the boundaries of gaming in a way like Brain Age did, where you're really cutting the ties to gaming as we knew it, and moving into a pure lifestyle game. Wii Fit still retained gaming baggage. The proper accompanying software for the Vitality Sensor could be the next brain age, the next pure lifestyle game, and thus be super huge

But it all depends on execution, of course.

Yep.  It's very intriguing... but the results could turn out mediocre.

E3 will be very interesting, can't wait.

I agree with you about that: I don't think he's a troll at all but I agree with people saying that he just has a lot of difficulties to predict the market since it has drastically changed with the DS and Wii. He and other analysts just seem unable to understand casual gamers just like third parties. They think in terms of features, graphics and better technologies and not in terms of games.

When Pachter says that the VS won't be a big deal but Natal will that's just stupid in my opinion because we just don't know the games that will be launched with these applications and that's what matters. Of course because for them the games are not important just the technology is and the technologies of natal and of the PS Move look stunning. But the fact is that the technology is not important if there aren't fun and unique games that take advantage of it. That's what those guys definitly don't understand even if the man that knows better than anyone else how to succeed in this area, Iwata, keep pretending that's what is important.

Hopefully for them MS and Sony know that otherwise my prediction is that they certainly won't succeed. On the other hand Iwata knows that very well, that's a big advantage.

seems like we've been arguing over nothing then :P

in terms of VS pachter is basing his predictions on the knowledge available to us. Natal was given a major E3 showing with compatable software, interviews with developers and live demonstrations. Since then there has been multiple events where microsoft has shwon natal to people and its even getting its own E3 conference. Microsoft is obviously pushing this hard. With VS we got a picture and a speech on paradigm shifts. we havnt got a demonstration, been shown software and have no idea how it works.  we might not have any final games shown but we know how natal with work and the type of software it'll utilise. w eknow nothing about VS

Well, I never said I think he was wrong because he was a troll :P.

But you know I think what you say in your second paragraph is very important : you are totally right we know a lot of things about Natal and we almost don't know anything about the VS. But again what do we know about Natal? We know how the technology work and what it can do. The technology.

We know few games also that's right but is there anything really unique and fun in what we have seen? When Wii Sports was unveiled that looked unique and fun. The Natal games that we have seen so far? I don't know about you but no I'm not convinced. Again you have to make the difference between the technology that is really impressive and the games themselves. But right know in terms of interesting new games and experiences I haven't seen anything significant that uses the VS but I can say the same about Natal or the Move.

I think the Wii vitality has an uphill struggle this time round not only because of what appears to be a clumsy mechanism but because it will be competing with 2 other new technologies in the Move and Natal.

Although I agree with most in that wait and see is probably best...Especially given how little we know.

The thing is, that Nintendo doesn't need a catalyst. The ball is already rolling for them. They already have the motion controls and thet other two are the ones that have to play catach up now.

I agree that the Wii Vitality Sensor looks stupid, but I am not ready to dismiss it. The idea of excercising with your video game looked like a certain flop to me, and boy was I wrong there.

I agree with Pachter. Outside of this website I've never heard mention of the Vitality sensor and I barely even know what it is/does. I don't see how it will be a big deal or people will rush out to buy it.

It's from nintendo and has something to do with the wii, enough said.

lol good point.
