Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Unreal Engine 3 for Wii? It's in Development ...

Are the porting the engine, or porting a game that's made on U3E? If it's the latter, it does narrow it down. Could even be Last Remnant, since it's S-E's first major multiplatform game that I remember.

theyre porting the engine

Epic Games' Mark Rein tells us that a version of the engine IS in development for Wii after all.

With development costs soaring, game creators are turning more and more to middleware engines, software that takes care of much of the underlying gameplay mechanics and allows them to focus on game design. One of the most popular in recent years is Unreal Engine 3, a tool that's been showcased in developer Epic's own games, such as Gears Of War.

[...]

Earlier in the year, Epic's Mark Rein told Kikizo that there were rumblings of a studio - not Epic - bringing Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. Speaking with us again in this new interview published today, Rein confirmed that an unnamed development team has taken up the challenge.

"I know one of our licensee who's giving it a shot," Rein said. "It's their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii."

Ubisoft had used Epic's previous tool, Unreal Engine 2, in its Wii launch game Red Steel.

Interesting. My guess is ... it'll be highly modified and scaled down, but it would be nice to see a working Unreal Engine 3 Middleware solution for the Wii.

Moral of the story: Money Talks and Bull "Shannon" Walks.

Money in this context referring to Revenue AKA Sales.

The never-ending story. Success is a magnet.

Do I remember people saying this was impossible and would never happen?

Why ... really ... the Wii is not a graphics based console , so I dont see the reason for a dumbed down port of the engine :?

With the awesome Wii sales you are going to see a lot of things that perhaps you don't expected, like capcom making Monster hunter a Wii exclusive now, or Unreal Engine 3 on Wii.

The Wii is having sales that surpass everything we have seen before, all developers in the world want their share of the pie now.

they should just port Unreal 2.5X (UE2.5 optimized for the Xbox, stronger then original 2.5)
Maybe because:

Xbox 1 = X86 + nVidia

Wii = PowerPC + ATI

But I don't know about those compatiblity issues on engines :P and yeah, I prefer to see them struggle with UE3.

I said UE2.5X becasue I dont see the Wii pushing more then twice the Xbox and 2.5X was still limited even though it was optimised for the Xbox, and the Xbox was actually a heavily modified X86 with X64 capabilities.

UE3 is way beyond what the Wii can handle, the engine would be more of 2.5X optimised for the Wii using the UE3's menu system and editors. I'm doubting we will see much better then SMG on the Wii. Maybe 2x SMG thats it.

I'm really glad that we have so much talent in this forum. I've seen 360 hardware experts (some of whom know more than Microsoft about the 360 hardware problems), and now it appears we have a Wii expert too. Maybe you should offer your advice to the silly guys who are doing the port, I'm sure they'll smack themselves in the head and immediately follow your suggestion.

PS: Sorry for so much sarcasm but I just can't handle such pretentiousness.

QFT!

Sadly ssj12 got no special knowledge regarding hard- or software!

Nonetheless he makes pointless statements like:

Xbox was actually a heavily modified X86 with X64 capabilities

x64 capabilities ? wtf is this ?

xbox came out in 2001 -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox
x86-64 was released in 2003 -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X64

The CPU of the xbox, wasn't heavily modified!
It was a slightly modified P3/Celeron without any support for X64.

p.s.

"UE3 is way beyond what the Wii can handle"
This sounds like a bad excuse! "developers are lazy" /sarcasm

 umm.. I build computers for a living.. I know hardware and software. And i knew the Xbox CPU was soemthing screwed up lieka  mix of something, I just thought that there was something about x64 with it. So I screwed up.. cut me some slack, I know my way around current PC hardware quite well.

 And I dont think the Wii could handle UT3 or Gears of War level graphics and physics.  Thats what I'm meaning about Wii cant handle UE3 as in it cant handle the full power of it. It has to be limited.

^But at least it won't be a game that looks like PS2. That's something, don't you think? :P

What's to say Gears of War or UT3 even use much of what the 360/PS3 are capable of?

What if it turns out that games like that are actually far below the abilities of those systems, and well within the range of Wii?

Yeah. Chew on that thought. You guys would be surprised what talented coding can do. I have a full-3D FPS somewhere on my computer (with multiplayer and a whole selection of 15 levels and multiplayer maps, give-or-take). This game could be run on a 486 system and it's less than 100KB large.

 that style of a game also take a ton of background processing and ram usage. The game is larger then it appears because it drags out everything your system can do.
