Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Unreal Engine 3 for Wii? It's in Development ...

Why ... really ... the Wii is not a graphics based console , so I dont see the reason for a dumbed down port of the engine :?

Because:

-The Wii is selling well
-I was actually pretty impressed with the Unreal 2 engine with Red Steel
-Developers are looking to get the most out of the hardware available

And most importantly, because the Wii is selling well.

With the awesome Wii sales you are going to see a lot of things that perhaps you don't expected, like capcom making Monster hunter a Wii exclusive now, or Unreal Engine 3 on Wii.

The Wii is having sales that surpass everything we have seen before, all developers in the world want their share of the pie now.

I also remember when they said it couldn't be done. But I think that has more to do with the fact that they didn't believe in the Wii. Now that Wii has the biggest userbase they smell the money.

Anybody have an idea how much the royalties are, for using the Unreal Engine 3? I guess only the big publishers can afford it though. I recall even big developpers, like Square Enix are working on their own engine to save production costs. So I recon it's a big amount of money.

Hey so it seems we all agree, it's all about Wii selling well.

I just browsed for games using the Unreal Engine 3, the possibility for some of these games being developped for the Wii seem more likely now! (Allthough in a dumped down version ofcourse)

Bioshock, Fatal Inertia, Blacksite: Area 51, Gears of War, Too Human, Turok...

Maybe it's my TV acting up again, but I don't think Galaxy looks quite as good as Jade Empire, or a few other Xbox titles. Very few games match the newest Mario in attention to detail, but I assume we're talking about sheer technical muscle here. Of course I am seriously thinking that my TV is getting crappier as it ages, or maybe it's just that I haven't really played my Xbox after seeing my first HD games, and now everything is less impressive.

How does UE3 differ from UE2 other than with better graphics? I think we all agree the Wii has a lot of untapped power, but how much will just switching to a new engine help? In human terms please, I tried to read the Wikipedia article, but didn't understand a word of it. =P

they should just port Unreal 2.5X (UE2.5 optimized for the Xbox, stronger then original 2.5)
 Maybe because:

Xbox 1 = X86 + nVidia

Wii = PowerPC + ATI

But I don't know about those compatiblity issues on engines :P and yeah, I prefer to see them struggle with UE3.

I said UE2.5X becasue I dont see the Wii pushing more then twice the Xbox and 2.5X was still limited even though it was optimised for the Xbox, and the Xbox was actually a heavily modified X86 with X64 capabilities.

UE3 is way beyond what the Wii can handle, the engine would be more of 2.5X optimised for the Wii using the UE3's menu system and editors.  I'm doubting we will see much better then SMG on the Wii. Maybe 2x SMG thats it.

I'm really glad that we have so much talent in this forum. I've seen 360 hardware experts (some of whom know more than Microsoft about the 360 hardware problems), and now it appears we have a Wii expert too. Maybe you should offer your advice to the silly guys who are doing the port, I'm sure they'll smack themselves in the head and immediately follow your suggestion.

PS: Sorry for so much sarcasm but I just can't handle such pretentiousness.

Yes, it's your TV. Jade Empire looks rather low poly'd compared to SMG, also lacks the parallax, bump and normal mapping, plus high dynamic range that SMG has. About the engine, it pretty much tells us what is possible in terms of available graphics and such. Let's take for example... the Super Mario 64 engine that runs on Ocarina of Time. Despite having muuuuuuch more power available on the Virtual Console (or GC), it doesn't runs any faster or has more antialiasing or etc. simply because it was not designed to do so. We have seen mostly crap from 3rd parties on the Wii because they port the engine directly from the PS2 version, which is far less powerful than Wii and lacks technologies like pixel shaders and S3TC. It depends on how well optimized the engine in relation to the hardware. Just look at FarCry Vengeance, I'm sure they ran the engine on the Wii and noticed it ran on 'Very Low' without optimizations... and they leaved it just like that.
