Forums - PC Discussion - intel i7 980x question

I am no expert so i was just wondering are there any applications out there that can even use 6 cores? I havn't heard of any so i was just curious and if not is it even worth to bother with?

i dont think its worth it at this time, considering the price, quad core is still the best option imo

Most applications made today have been made X core aware in that they are designed to scale to as many cores as applicable.

Tease.

You'd be better off waiting for a non-extreme version of the same architecture to come out, it would be half the price or more if you did (unless money's no obstacle).

There are some applications that don't work properly at all on it because they mess up when detecting amounts of cores that aren't powers of 2.

For gaming it will be pointless. Unless your running a server or something i would pass

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!

There's not much that can make use of hyperthreading at the moment. Intel really overshot the market with the i7 line.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

If you really need a 6-core, but can't afford $1000, get the Thuban quad-core coming about May. 2.8GHz (3.3GHz Turbo) at ~$200 or 3.2GHz (3.6GHz Turbo) at ~$300.

But you're probably better off with a fast quad-core for desktop apps, an i5 750 or Phenom II X4 if you can't go above $180.

The $1000 Intel Extreme Editions are very poor value, but they are fast.

Applications yeah... (mostly server and video stuff, I'm guessing)

Games, not so much as far as I've heard.

In my opinion there is no need to upgrade at this time since I don't think that there are any games that take advantage of 6 cores at the moment.

Off topic I'm new to this site how are people adding systems and games to their profile? When I go to games owned it says 0 and I don't see any links to change it.
