Forums - Sony Discussion - I use OtherOS. Do you? And what for?

A good many people are under the false assumption that no one uses the OtherOS feature.  I am curious who all uses it and what they do with it.

I personally HATE the PS3s Media Server utility (its terrible), so I use the OtherOS feature for this.  Im running YDL v.6.1 (much faster for what I do than Ubuntu was and I will update to v.6.2 once it has some of its bugs fixed).  I have a nice little Samba Server  setup in a pretty gutted Gnome environment, running (usually) Mplayer.  I both stream over the network from my W7 machine or just copy them directly over and play them.

I also have a few Emus running (NES/SNES) etc, and use this to surf the net, which is a HELL OF A LOT better than the built in browser.

So what do you all use it for?

I will end up just buying a new PS3 slim.  The cost of getting something else setup as a media server is higher than another 299 system.  This does not mean I am very happy about this.

you know, you could put together a HTPC for ~$300 (just built one myself) that has more HDD space, uses less energy, and is quiter along with other benefits like being more flexible and easy to repair (rather than a $150 charge if the PS3 breaks down). The only thing it wouldn't do is play Blu-rays.

Not saying I support Sony's decision, but I think you'd be better off building a HTPC.

I have thought about the HTPC route in the past, but never could find a case sized correctly.  Unfortunately, I do not have the luxury of putting just anything there.  My current PS3 is an original 60gig (upgraded to a 500) that I already took apart and replaced the fans (added some new ones) and it makes less sound than my audio receiver.

Ill look into an HTPC again.  If all else fails, $299 for another PS3 isnt so bad, tho I guess I could use my Work Laptop (that I do not use for Work) until I find a better solution.

I don't use the Other OS option, but often thought about replacing my ageing tower PC with my 60gig and buying a new slim. Especially if i can get Dawn of War 2 working on it (pretty much the only thing holding me back from doing that).

I really like Linux systems ever since i installed Ubuntu on a really old laptop and was amazed at the results. I would install it on more of my computers if it was a little easier to do so - like my Sammy Netbook.

I still don't get how everyone is placing this on Sony, essentially, their hands were forced, how come you guys can't see that.

I would agree with you on that point.

I still think and hope it's a joke... wasn't there an article not long ago that the army bought a lot of PS3 for a cluster? isn't the folding@home project running a cluster too? I don't know.

I would think institutions don't use it for gaming but I also think they get the frequent updates. I don't think Sony would screw people and institutions that got hold of several PS3s solely for this purpose...

folding can be a stand alone affair and it doesn't need a 2ndary OS

I see a good deal of this too.  Sony is taking it away, not Geodouche.  While I understand WHY they are removing the feature, it does not mean I have to be happy about it.  If I was in their position, I would probably do the same.

Not asking people to be happy, just be understanding. Majority of complaints I see don't even mention this Geodude, it's all placed on Sony.

If this ends up as firmware 3.50 releasing on the 1st of April with new features... I'll be laughing for months!

No.  I've got a laptop.
