Forums - Sony Discussion - Blu ray disc or digital download

I'm not sure which one is th better choice, downloading it to my ps3 will stop my gfs family from trying to borrow movies but if something would happen to my ps3 i would lose my movies on my HDD. Any suggestions?

This is my policy.

Movies I love = Blu-ray
Movies that are just on the edge of my appeal = PSN purchase
Movies that would be interesting to see = PSN Rental

Games that take advantage of Blu-ray = Blu-ray
Games under 10GB = PSN if possible

On the subject of your gf's family barrowing movies. Are they rough on your stuff? Do they take it for extended periods of time? Or do you just not like to share? If its the first to, drop her because she will drag you down the same path. If its the later, either man up and say no, or be more friendly.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

They are leeches lol, her brother is the biggest offender and I have already told him to f-off lol. They are the kind of people that will wait for someone to buy it and then pass it along instead of buying themselves. My gf noticed one my movies were missing and becuase the entire colony of blood suckers was over one day she can't determine who did it.

The reason why dvd/bluray/any other format will always reign over digital download is because people like to own hard copies to put on their shelf, and so they know they cannot lose it (other than theft, accident, ect) You see these arguments all the time and people have been saying FOR YEARS how movies and games are all going digital, while it has picked up 'steam' (pun intended) I believe it will never fully eclipse actually owning a hard copy of a game or movie. People, including myself, feel much safer and more secure owning the game itself. Renting digital, is of course, okay.

So in short. Your question is quite easily answered and isn't really up for debate at all. Bluray and DVD will always reign supreme over digital distribution.

Oh and this was a great thread I ask myself this question frequently and I have been torn both ways..

I kinda agree with KGB29's policy.

Both have their pros and cons but I kinda prefer BR or DVD. Downloads can come with all kind off silly restrictions and I hate being told what I can or cannot do with something I paid for...in such cases.

The downside is that discs can take up a lot of space but as I have enough of that it is not an issue.

I had a similar problem with mates taking my movies so I found a place to hide them. Your situation may be different from mine and I am sure you have thought of this.

Most people have a porn hideaway for this kinda thing...but again space can be a problem.

For the moment I'm BR / Physical centric with renting of disks.

I like the idea of downloads but for me it still takes too long and I balk at the idea if waiting for 10 plus GB of data to download when I could be using that bandwidth to play games or stream radio stations or both.

Also, I thought BR's were pretty durable, what does you GFs family do with them?

BTW you can backup content and I believe worst case is you'd need to re-download on a new PS3.

Im thinking children got to them. I have a psp and I have thought of using it as a back up for my ps3 since I really don't use it much unless i'm on a trip. Every movie I have is about 2.5 gig hd version, can you upgrade the HDD in the new models?

Yah, so far as I know.  Upgrading the HDD is probably worth it if you really want to put movies, etc. on your PS3.  I tend to buy BR but I've got lots of other videos, music videos, etc. plus a lot of music and photos on my PS3, so I upgraded the HDD and backup to an external HDD.

Actually, I believe for movies simply plugging in an external HDD via USB could work for you too if you don't want to change your PS3 HDD.  Check carefully first, though, as I'm not sure the PSN Video service or Netflix or whatever will recognise and allow you to use an external HDD.

I stuck a 250 GB HDD in my PS3 and attached another 500GB via USB.  Lol, that seems so crazy.  It's insane the amount of HDD people easily rack up now!

lol I know, I have an 8gig flash drive so I'll copy a movie to it and see what happens. It wouldnt be so bad if the psn saved your movie downloads like everything else
