"The text above was provided to me by SCE management" -Geoffrey Levand, sony.com

EDIT:

What makes you think that when PS3 is hacked that Linux will be needed to use the hack, or that it will only work on phat PS3s? Linux is just used to open the door. Obviously removing it now won't stop the hackers, because they simply won't update. On the contrary, they will work harder, because they now have a legitimate reason to hack PS3. So far, Other OS prevented many hackers from trying to crack PS3, because there was really no need to.

So all this does is punish regular users who bought the launch model for a lot of money.

EDIT 2: Geohot Replies

Wait, you are removing a feature?

First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support. My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim(not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has(or probably will be) done on the PS3.

Now you go and remove a feature that people expected to be included with the expensive device they purchased, citing "security concerns". What security concerns? It's not like the exploit can be run even close to without the users knowledge. You have to open the fucking thing up. How could this harm users? Your blog post doesn't list positive reasons for upgrading like I think most users expect. Instead it lists things you will lose if you don't upgrade. Seriously?

The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout it's life cycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field.

Again I'm sorry users. Sony, I expected more from you.

Don't Update

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

What do you expect from a company which thought it was fine to "own" their customer's PCs by including a rootkit trojan in their music CDs?

Regardless of how awesome or not Sony's products are, no one can deny that they're pretty low in customer treatment and respect. Hopefully this episode will get more people to realize that.

That was before some guy publicly announced that he could hack the PS3 GameOS by going through OtherOS.

Be realistic guys.

Well yes it happens, but Sony is not the exception, pretty much all other console manufacturers and publishers / developers have backstabbed their audience atleast once. The majority of people are not using this option on their PS3 and if there is a possibility of piracy connected to the option to install other OS, than it has to be disabled, that's only logical. It can be a problem for some folks, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker. Slim models don't have this option at all and they are still selling like hotcakes.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Like the OS was a very necessary feature for the 33m ppl who bought a ps3, now watch how ppl starts acting like the OS feature was a big deal when b4 they didn't even give a rats about the damn thing all to to have some negative for the big bad SONY.

If this turns out to be true, as soon as a modchip comes out, I will be devoting a portion of my free time to modding PS3s pro-bono.

Looks like I will be putting my fat PS3 into storage then and get that Slim I've been considering for a while now.

Stop crying damage control saying this isn't a big feature by the way guys.  I'm sick of hearing people throw this feature in peoples faces over the last few years as Sony being somehow benevolent with their hardware by having it.  They've officially lied in the public domain, nobody should be saying this is a good thing for any company to do and most of you would definately crucify Microsoft for doing the same.
