Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So, megaflop GTA: CW for DS reached 1M

Furthermore... the PS1 version of GTA actually was a "late port" from PC.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as niggers, is in fact, Afrcan Americans/niggers, or as I've recently taken to calling them, Afrcan Americans plus niggers. Niggers is not an race unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Afrcan Americans system made useful by the Afrcan American community.

Many slave owners run a modified version of the Afrcan Americans every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Afrcan Americans which is widely used today is often called "niggers", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Afrcan Americans system, developed by the Afrcan Americans Project.

There really are niggers, and these people are using them, but it is just a part of the system they use. Niggers are the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the Afrcan American community's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an Afrcan American community, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete Afrcan American community. Niggers are normally used in combination with the Afrcan Americans community: the whole system is basically Afrcan Americans with niggers added, or Afrcan Americans/niggers. All the so-called "niggers" are really distributions of Afrcan Americans/niggers.

I say let's demand Rockstar at least try to make a 3D GTA game for the DS (since Cop the Recruit shows the system can handle it), and then we will see for sure.

128 million userbase + its Grand Theft Auto = 1 million sales? That's still a flop.

PSP only has about 57 million userbase and Liberty City stories managed 6 million sales.

If it was a new IP or whatever I'd eat crow for calling it a flop; for GTA however, its a flop.

It's a huge user base, wider than that of anything Sony or Microsoft has, and on a console that has never before hosted a GTA game, let alone one that is for many, a radical departure from the type of GTA game that they have been used to playing.

Also, what other games are PSP owners really supposed to buy? There's like "zero" competition for a GTA game on that system. Unless you're counting ATV: Offroad Fury.

Seriously, one of these two handhelds has a gigantic library of games, and the other has some movies you can buy on discount at k-mart.

You can justify the weak sales however you want. Yeah GTA has never been on Nintendo before. I guarantee if they put Super Mario Galaxy on Ps3 or 360 it would sell millions, it wouldn't matter that Mario has never been on Sony or Nintendo.

And yeah you're probably right, the lack of competition helped GTA LCS sales on PSP just like being a launch title helped Resistance FoM sell really well. But you know what competitition GTA did have on PSP? Yep, you guessed it. PIRACY. How many millions of copies do you think have been downloaded illegally?

This thread gives me a migraine.

We are comparing games made 10 years ago to prove points.

The DS version is one of the GTA ever made, it was designed for it, and was well reviewed compared to those old GTA games you guys bring up.

Second, it as well advertised, even South PARK had an episode on it.

Now, NO ONE brought up the whole top down issue, Everyone expected this game to sell on par with the PSP versions of GTA. We had threads on how it was going to dominate during the holidays.
Now, one million is always a big thing, but for certain franchises, the expectations are more.
If FFVSXIII sells just one million, the same people defending this would be the same making threads on how disappointed they are with the sales.

How quiclkly some of you forget:

LBP, Killzone 2, GT PSP ( that was a big one)

Guess what, they all have sold over 1 million.

I'm saying that the game was a really good game but it should have sold more copies. The game was critically acclaimed, a really fun game and deserved to sell more copies. Is there a problem with saying that people should buy a game? It's also part of the GTA games, which should have given people incentive because they like seeing familiar franchises (and before games like Call of Duty for the DS get thrown into the argument, this isn't a crappy port to a major HD game. this is a completely new entry into the GTA franchise).

I never said this game or any of those games should all sell the same amount of copies every time. My point wasn't to say "every mario game sells 10 million copies!" it was that "Mario games always hit the million sales mark easily." And you can use that for any of those cases as well. Pokemon generally hits a million sales easily (even for the Mystery Dungeon and Ranger games). Gran Turismo managed to sell a million on the PSP (despite the fact that it's on the PSP). Halo Wars hit close to 2 million in sales (with it being a RTS, which isn't a very popular genre on consoles).

Since when does critical acclaim equal commercial success?

Critical Acclaim doesn't equal Commercial Success. It does however mean that if a series that is generally found great (Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, and Tony Hawk are prime examples) and then starts releasing subpar, mediocre games, generally sales/popularity of the games tend to spiral downward. Being critically acclaimed doesn't equal commercial success but being a critical flop can destroy a game.

I was talking about this:

I'm saying that the game was a really good game but it should have sold more copies. The game was critically acclaimed, a really fun game and deserved to sell more copies.

So was I...I'm saying the game was critically acclaimed, so it didn't have terrible reviews going against it when it was released. There's a lot of DS versions of games that tend to get slammed by critics and this one turned out to be one of the most critically acclaimed games for the DS to release last year.

Your point seems to be that critically acclaimed games should sell well.  That is simply not the case.  There are plenty examples of critical darlings that don't do well commercially.  That is true for all mediums.

"version" means a port or multiplatform release. This is an original game, which often gets good reveiws. See Mario Kart DS, Final Fantasy III and IV (those were enhanced remakes, which are changed enough to be almost like new), Contra 4.

Again, the critical acclaim doesn't matter if most of the audience doesn't want it. Movie buffs have known that for years.

It's still 8 Million units of top-down GTA's. Of which we know GTA and GTA2 will have been the biggest sellers. likely 2/3 Million between them... Probably making VGC figures bang on the mark (with PC included).

The remaining 3 Million units would have been the 2 expansions, and whatever the GB games did.

Makes more than enough sense to me.

Except it doesn't.  Your point completly disapears now.  Your saying the GTA numbers are right with the PC numbers included.  So it's about 1 million per console.

Not to mention there was a dreamcast version of GTA2, and those handheld releases were in fact GTA 1 &2.  Also the compilation pack for the PS1.

Either way by the numbers... espeically if you we go by YOUR numbers that give the PS1 releases such high numbers.... your average mean for sales of a GTA top down game are WELL below 1 million.  The PSP is a success by comparison.

My point doesn't disappear at all, as you are just averaging between the systems they were on. It's VERY, VERY unlikely the DC or GB versions sold even half as well as the PC or PSone versions. You know this...

Anyway, this has dragged on for long enough and i've even had hate mail... The simple fact is, it has sold subpar for a GTA game. Fact. You can't argue this. The following quote puts it perfectly...

"GTA 3 -11 million

GTA VC -14 million

GTA SA -20 million

GTA IV -13 million

GTA CW -1 million....

......on the best selling system ever. Yeah it's not a flop at all."

Now, i need to go play some CoD

I personally am not. My argument is that the reason for it is a combination of being top-down, having an atypical style to the realistic style of the 3D games, and having a feel that doesn't fit the action/mayhem that made the series a top-tier franchise.

"Yeah it's not a flop at all."

That isn't what you think it is. Flop is defined by losing money, not by relative sales. Too Human is a flop, but we know how much that game cost to make.
