You're absolutely right, the PSP is a very small item on Sony's payroll. I admit that my comment was simply fanboyish in nature.

However, I still detest Sony (as well as other companies) push for Active Shutter 3D systems. Nintendo's desire for a glassless one is far better (hell, even the passive system would be fantastic) and will become the standard.

I couldnt agree more. Honestly, companies like Samsung and Panasonic are screwing the pooch when it comes to 3d with all of these exclusives arrangements. The best thing about this announcment is that if nintendo is embracing it then it bodes well for 3d entertainment in general which is good for all of us.

What Nintendo is doing is a true 3D, you will see different things by looking at different angles. The 3D Sony is doing is just an optical illusion of 3D i.e. adds nothing.

Didn't Sony call the DS a gimmick?, I bet Nintendo hopes this ones turns out just the same!
Talking of demographics, designing a handeld for 8-9 year olds with dual screen and stylus control makes even less sense than 3D.

They never called the DS a gimmick..also, it wont since SONY has announced long ago that the Playstation 3 will offer 3d gaming/movies this year..

although the need for glasses is there. If a 3d tv costs that much, I can only imagine how much a 3DS will cost with a screen that can do 3D without glasses, if tv's with glasses cost well over 2k.

Gimmick is exactly what Sony called the DS.

""With the DS, it’s fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen,” Harrison continued. “But I fear that it won’t have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick – so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that.”"

3D is easy to do on a handheld, multi-layer LCD technology has been around for a while. It won't be that expensive to do.

Please bring me a source for your little quote, if 3d is so hard to implement on an HD TV, what makes you think its simple to impliment on a handheld?

@Pesmerga515

They didn't mock, they simply said "its an interesting idea to bring 3d to handhelds, but based on our market research not many people are too interested in 3d gaming on a handheld, and they don't see a young audience going ape shit over 3d gaming on a handheld"

SONY is the one who started the whole 3d gaming thing to begin with, so before you claim they are "going to rip off" nintendo please do some research.. 3D GAMING is coming to PLAYSTATION 3 this year.

am I the only one who fails to see why being 9 instead of 19 has an effect or you ability to enjoy 3D?

Well I have been wondering that why they would say it.. and the only answer that I can think of is because Sony's vision on 3d involves 3d glasses and cause little kids can't wear the glasses propely while playing a handheld which you would hold a bit down.. they would slide off.. maybe sony didn't think about 3d without glasses..

Well I have another idea about this. I've seen a lot of movies with the 3D gimmick recently and all of them are nothing but just regular movies with a cheap 3D effect added (Coraline was much better on 2D, Avatar and Alice in Wonderland is the same) so instead of being an amazing experience it was just annoying and gave me a headache.

The most recent movie with a good use of 3D is in my opinion the Polar Express and the reason of that is because the movie was planned as a 3D experience. There's a huge difference between making a 3D movie and just making a movie with the 3D effects added later, so as an adult I can check the difference and set my experiences based on that. But kids are different, they enjoy life much than adults and get amazed with experiences like 3D even if these experiences are just cheap adds in a movie or game.

So well I think kids could jump into the 3D gaming faster than adults.

which again is the complete opposite of what this guy was saying. Im predicting that it will be a lot eaiser and cheaper for a 9 year old to buy a 3DS than a PS3 + 3D ready TV + glasses

SONY'S CHECKLIST

[x] Downplay and mock Nintendo's new hardware implementation.

[ ] Scramble to put it into our own hardware.

[ ] Once finished, mock Nintendo again for not having the slight enhancement that we have for the hardware.

Yep, looks like they're right on schedule.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Well, I'd love to hear your definition, chief, and more importantly, how it does not at all apply to Sony's PR/advertising.

This is the reverse of what everyone says BTW. It was Nintendo who saw Sony pushing 3D. So they had to announce this before them. So they could steal the spotlight.

To me it means make fun of/ridicule... something I didn't see them doing. Maybe I just need some fanboy glasses though... Lucky for me Sony will be sending me a pair this year for my 3d set-up... Oh wait... they just got the 3Ds news way before everyone else and just tacking it on.. amirite?

Both HDTV 3D with glasses and handheld 3D with multi-layer LCD are easy to do, they are simply very different techs.

Nothing new.

Bullet point one.

And who can say? Nintendo's handling it, not us.

And Sony didn't start the 3D gaming thing. nVidia did.
