Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are you ashamed of being a gamer?

Nope not ashamed.

Some friends i can talk to about gaming, some don't understand.
It's like talking about cars, i really don't care about them and have no knowledge except on how to drive one.
I don't hide my dis-interest in cars and i don't hide my interest in gaming.
And yeah i get the occasional 'nerd'... I don't care. Just shows how shallow people are.

But i do understand that hearing a conversation about what happened in Azeroth last night and how kick-ass someones newly crafted legs are is just a tiny bit too much to handle for non-gamers... hell even for gamers...

Live and let live...

That's how it works with me really. Even with other who have played WoW a ton we never even talk "oh yeah I have over 3k agility and I got the Loop of the agile the other da" because conversations like that are indeed absolutely sad. We do talk in general about who killed what and discuss class balance, but that's about it. When talking about other games it really comes down to just general "yeah this game is a lot of fun" type comments then the coversation moves on.

Games are a very poor conversation subject, and talking about them in depth is indeed sad. The most I ever talk about a game in-depth is if someone asks me how a games if they are wondering whether to buy it or not, ony then do I give even the most cursory of explnations of the game. Otherwise it's just "this game is good, his one did well, this one seems to get you laid" sort of coversation.

Pretty much everyone who has taken some interest to my life outside of work, knows. Pretty much everyone I know though, and talk often to, isn't a gamer, so I don't really talk much about games (there is one WoW girls in my class but it's not my kind of topic so it's very occasional).

Never gotten any bashing based on that though, except when I had a relationship going downhill because of Ragnarok Online. But then again I felt bad about that myself and haven't done MMOs since.

edit: Actually more people get hung up on the anime/manga bit, though that was before. Now that I'm actually studying Japanese, nobody in class is surprised and the rest contribute those interests to studying Japanese, so it's a smooth ride.

You know what's not cool to most girls? When you pretend to be something that you're not and then they find out later. I started being much more successful with them when I told them my interests up front (gaming, Bond, Star Wars, sports, old movies, etc.) Don't ever be ashamed of what you are. That's what makes you YOU.

Amen. If a girl doesn't like you for who you are or they want to change you, fuck them. When I see all these instances of girlfriends/wives holding their men on the leash telling them that they can't play too much or they can't spend too much money on gaming, it makes me angry. Fuck that shit. If they don't like a guy for who he is, they ain't worth shit (and vice versa.. not being sexist. lol).

I personally am proud to be a geek (see link) as amp316 said "it make you YOU" everyone has there little things. my mum and sister for example like to talk about soaps (tv drama) and stuff and it annoys me lol. I have next to no interest in it and I guess I can see where people who think gaming is weird are coming from.

you are a geek when

also from things I have read, learned and experienced, in general gamers are more open to discussion on things that would be considered weird or impossible and will to debate until we reach what seems to be the truth. which generally makes for interesting conversations and more opportunity's for us to put would we believe we know into practice. imo. I connect all of this to fluid intelligence.

video games improve fluid intelligence

maybe this makes me weird but I am proud of it and am willing to debate with anyone who thinks I am wrong.

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).

I avoid talking about anything related to gaming when I'm at parties or whatever. I simply won't mention it, and I'll change the subject if someone else brings it up. Frankly, I have more interesting things to talk about than how I beat God of War on very hard or got the expert achievements in Left 4 Dead 2.

So apart from one friend who is a massive playstation fanboy, I don't really talk to others about gaming. I may mention it in passing, or talk about it with people I get to know, but I try to be subtle about it and do my best to avoid the "gamer" label.

Nope! I have never been ashamed or hid in anyway that I love video games. Never been told that is sad by any girl. In fact, most of them around here are into them a little bit. Now, they are not all big players, but they have fun with the them. One of my ex's bought my Gameboy Advance for my B-Day because she wanted to play it too. I do not think I know anyone around here who thinks of video games in a negative way. Even the "rich" peoples kids have at least handhelds as you can see them walking around with them sometimes. I do not go around talking about them though. I have better things most of the time to discuss with people I know in real life. Ofcourse, A few expections like at my job. One of my co workers has a PS3 so we inform each other what we think about the current games for our systems.

At my College my English professor just got a Nintendo Wii. ( I helped her make up her mind to get it by bringing it up a little before class each week heh) My Psych teacher also has a Nintendo Wii and a DS!!! She used her DS as a excuse for taking a little longer than normal to grade our papers hahah!!!

I sencond this comment. I talk about my interests with anyone who has the same interests. I'll pull out my DS in public and start playing, or start reading my manga in the bus or plane. I don't give a damn what anybody says.
