Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie: Move is “Wii-too”

Reggie talking smack about PS Move is good for the PS Move.

It means they're worried. The worst sign for Move's potential would be if Nintendo completely ignored it.

Reggie should chose his words more carefully though. Saying Move does basically the same thing as Wii means PS3 owners can say to themselves "so I don't need to think about getting a Wii any more." And people yet to get into this generation can say. "Cool, I can get excellent HD games AND Wiimote style games all in one package" *does the maths* "Yep and it'll be cheaper overall to get PS3+Move than to get PS3 + Wii"

Exciting software? He obviously hasn't seen that Endgadget tech demo. That looks SWEET!

He's 100% correct. It'll come down to the games and other software applications. I think any fair minded person will acknowledge that Sony 1st party studios make some pretty good games. And 2nd and 3rd parties have done some pretty good work on Sony systems too (including PS3 + 360). He's right to be worried about Sony's 1st party studios putting a decent amount of resource behind Move development, because the talent is unquestionably there there.

And that's why Reggie feels the need to go on the offensive against PS Move.

You cannot infer from Reggies statements here about the prospects of the PS Move by his reaction to it. In addition to this, I bet he is about 10* more concerned with what the Wii audience thinks and what his potential audience thinks than the <25% of the market which owns a PS3 might think. Hes not going after a fraction of a fraction of PS3 users who might be interested in the Wii when his company has bigger markets still not yet fully tapped out.

Yes Sony have some pretty great game studios, but do they have the potential to bring out Wii X games which capture the mass markets attention, especially when Sony have to split their time between normal and Move control schemes? At this point without proof of Sony diverting even 33% of their resources to Move related projects he has little to worry about.

Gone the day's of the cool, calm and humble Nintendo. They get a little competition and their up in arm's making all sort's of random claim's and rah rah rah.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

It's "über". It's a common mistake because most people are to lazy to hit the key right next to "p", so they go with the more comfortably to reach "u".

Thanks, will remember that for next time.

The Wii too comment was unnecessary, but anyways I agree with him unless natal and move show something friggen crazy.

It already has shown some crazy tech already tho....and we are not even at E3 yet!

It would be funny to see if someone just say hey he is alright...he tells the truth but in return and bash on MS and Sony PR :D Hypocracy at it's best imo...they are all equally bad

It's one thing to be shown tech demos, it's another to be shown actual software. Sony's GDC wasn't impressive, and the impressions show that Sony has a lot of work to do before they release Move.

Ugh yeah GDC and Engadget are TECH DEMO places targeted at game developers and tech enthusists...games shown were incomplete pre alpha versions....so wait until E3 to judge the games pls

And again, Move has shown it can do so much already that the Wii can't do, if your gonna argue on the capabilities then your just biased or malinformed imo

What can't the Wii do other than the rather pointless (for me at least) augmented reality? Nothing that I've seen shows any other 'improvement'

Go read up on it then :) I'm not gonna list all the capabilities shown here....(for your reference there is an official Move thread that has some nice info)

As for being pointless :D I HAVE played the wii....it can use some augmented reality when your playing with yoru friends (in games that require a lto of movement) Just as I have seen

Why not give me three things that it can do better than the Wii?

facial recognition, tracking

import every day object's into the software on the fly: IE show the EYETOY an object and it can be input directly on the fly into the game.

position tracking in 3d space of a human body.

So the augmented reality stuff I mentioned already? Basically what the eyetoy was doing previously? What about what it can do better than the Wii? I didn't ask what it could do that the Wii has not attempted, mainly because I'm not interested in the camera stuff. I'm more interested in the motion gubbins and I remain sceptical about improvements there.

you do know with the playstation Move need's the EYETOY to work. you cannot even use the controller with out they Eyetoy. Its like a mocap, your trying to remove what make's the Move the move..

that's like saying remove the sensor bar off of the Nintendo Wii..without the motion sensor bar the Wiimote would not work.

Two candles are a sufficient replacement for the Wii's sensor bar in pretty much all cases. Just make sure that you don't burn anything.

So that means don't put it under your TV right?

I seem to recall mentioning that "potential Wii audience" you speak of in my post. In case you missed it, here it is again 'And people yet to get into this generation can say. "Cool, I can get excellent HD games AND Wiimote style games all in one package" *does the maths* "Yep and it'll be cheaper overall to get PS3+Move than to get PS3 + Wii"'. Such people will say the same thing about Natal, and it'll be the cheapest of all HD+motion control options to boot; which is why Kevin Butler had to talk smack about Natal. Fact is Move (and Natal) are seeking to make inroads into that not yet fully tapped out market you mention. A market that heretofore was solely Nintendo's. Reggie would be stupid to not to worry, because the motion control hardware Sony and MS have produced are every bit as good as Wii's, which means Wii stands to lose a substantial amount of the blue ocean if they don't front foot it.

You can infer plenty about their level of concern over the potential of the competition by how aggressively they bag it. At this point I'd say Reggie is swinging harder than I've ever seen against the PS3. Up to now Nintendo really has been able to ignore the PS3 as an irrelevance; except in Japan, and even then only recently and only to a lesser degree.

And in reality he really does need to worry about his Wii install base, because there is potential for Wii owners to look at the grass on the other side of the fence and seriously consider giving it a nibble. Not because the motion controls are (or even seem) better or bring anything substantially new, but because on the other side of the fence there are tasty morsels not related to motion controls that serve as inducements.

And since Reggie talked smack about both Move and Natal what I'm saying pretty much applies to the Natal threat to Wii as well.

Ninty can't rest on it's current suite of games and applications zand say, well we've got all that so you don't need PS Move or Natal. They've got to say "Look we've got all this stuff coming for you too."

I didn't notice him throwing vitality sensor out there. Did I miss that, or did he not mention it?

I do understand that is how move works a lot of the time, probably not all though.

Quite a few games work without the sensor bar as it only detects the cursor and helps orientate the motion plus now and again.

Now some people still take offense when they hear Wii Too or Move is a copy. Well, what do you think what the public reaction will be? "Move and its games are new and it uses different technology", you got to be kidding. Most people's first reaction will be "Hey, that's like the Wii and the games too".

...

Reggie isn't bashing Sony here, he's just saying what pretty much everyone thinks about Move. I've said it before, I have yet to see a balanced member of our forum who would deny that Move classifies as Wii Too. It's that obvious what is going on and even Sony themselves (!) have admitted to going after people who are interested in what the Wii offers, but for some bizarre reason there are some people who don't want to see what everyone else can see.

Exactly, Sony has been quite shameless in their copying of Nintendo motion controls, even the sports game they are releasing with it. Although it's never stopped them in the past either, so why stop now?
