Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo says 500k SMG sales in first week

I live in Canada and Galaxy is sold out at EB Games, Future Shop, BestBuy, and even the Superstore (A big grocery chain). Most likely Walmart as well, but I didnt check there. Many of these places got hundreds of copies too. So dont be surprised if Canada sold more than 200,000 copies. You guys should phone a couple of the BestBuys or Futureshops here and ask them how many copies they have sold.

Personally I think they picked a good number and said more than that. Really I don't think Nintendo has any idea how much it actually sold. They should have instead said how much they shipped.

But right now maybe it's good to pick a nice median between the 2. How about 625k for now haha.

Although right now by the way Nintendo worded they don't sound to confident about their own numbers. Not to mention there is no way they could be saying shipments as that would be way too little for such a big game. One that they could easily ship 1 million based on hype first week.

The last few months, VG charts numbers on big games have been real high on a bunch of the big name games (Metroid, Bioshock, Guitar hero, Orange Box, Etc) most of which were off by well over 100k. So it wouldn't suprise me if SMG was over shot by 100k or so and it also wouldn't suprise me if COD 4 and Assassins Creed's numbers end up being too high too.

Whenever the software sales end up being off they are almost always on the overtracked side and not the undertracked. It mostly just leads to disappointment that the NPD software sales end up being a lot less (he did nail Halo 3 really good though).

I think they just wanted to get that press release out before SMG drops to 97 on metacritic. That said I'm pleased that a great game is getting great sales.

Why stop at 500k if it sold more then that? I'm sure if it sold 600k they would have used that instead of the 500k number?

My guess is that it sold in the 500-540k range or they would have stated that at 560k that it sold nearly 600K units in the US alone.

When you are a publicly traded company like Nintendo, you release the best numbers you can because it could spur stock increases because of the successes. And if it were 750k like VGC predicted, Nintendo would have released a statement that SMG sold 3/4 of a million units. As a business it makes sense to give out the best numbers possible, not to low ball it.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

Nintendo is a traditional reserved company when it comes to numbers releases.  If this info is based on NPD data for the week then it is likely they would play it conservative as they always do.

With that said I agree that 550k or so seems to be a reasonable spot to put US sales and if you put the rest of the Americas at around 150k or so the VGC number isn't really that far off (less than 10%).

Well I'd say the "more than 500k" and "US sales" means that this is a bit vague to make any final conclusions. I'm happy with out 750k figure based on the data I have.

I have one question regarding software sales.  When you update an old game with lower numbers the numbers never change in the games database.  For example when bioshock was at 1.31 mill worldwide and you adjusted it back and it was at like 1.10 million after, the numbers on it's page were still at the 1.31 (and still are). They only change on the weekly page.

Is this some kind of glitch in the way the site works or are they left like that intentionally?

Don't forget those numbers are from their internal tracking service, so it is unclear what the margin of error for those numbers are. It could very well be that their numbers indicate sales somewhere from 500-700k and going with a more than 500k at least means they're on the safe side.
