Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo says 500k SMG sales in first week

Kind of a bummer after seeing the 750k number, but never say I hide the numbers.

Oh yeah, this is US only. You'd have to add in some for the rest of NA sales, so the number is a bit higher taking that into account.

CRITICS AND CONSUMERS AGREE: SUPER MARIO GALAXY IS OUT OF THIS WORLD

Wii Celebrates One Year, Strong Momentum and Best-Reviewed Game – Ever

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 20, 2007 – Could Super Mario Galaxy™ be the best video game of all time?

If you ask critics and consumers, the answer is a resounding yes. Reviewers for video game and mainstream media alike are responding with high marks to the boundless sense of wonder and fun the game brings to both experienced and novice players.

Independent review-tracking site GameRankings.com now lists Super Mario Galaxy for Nintendo's Wii™ system as the best-reviewed game of all time, and another review-tracking site, Metacritic.com, lists Super Mario Galaxy as having "Universal Acclaim," with a score of 98 out of 100.

More on what reviewers are saying:

  • GameSpot.com: Super Mario Galaxy "has tons of appeal for both the less experienced player and the longtime gamer. ... If ever there were a must-own Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy is it."
  • Yahoo!: "… you'd be hard pressed to find (a game) as genuinely enjoyable as Mario's latest. If you own a Wii, you should own this, too."
  • 1UP.com - "Galaxy proves that Mario matters just as much today as he did 25 years ago, and that makes him one of a kind in this medium. But don't play Galaxy simply because Mario is the timeless godfather of gaming. No, play Galaxy because it's fantastic."

"Super Mario Galaxy had the strongest one-week debut of any Wii game to date and has also become the best-selling Mario title ever in its first week, with U.S. sales of more than 500,000, based on internal sales figures," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "It makes an easy gift choice as the holiday shopping season kicks off."

Consumers can try Super Mario Galaxy before they buy it at one of 25 malls across the country during Nintendo's Mall Experience, showcasing all the best video games for the holidays. Nintendo's Mall Experience runs through Jan. 8. To find a mall near you, visit http://wii.nintendo.com/malltour_07.jsp.

Canada bought 250,000 copies?

Go Canada!

See Ya George.

"He did not die - He passed Away"

At least following a comedians own jokes makes his death easier.

"more than 500,000".

They didn't specify how much. Looks more like they just rounded a lot (and missed out on Canadian sales and the like).

well, if it's over 750k they would have said 750k i imagine. plus this is sold to retailer data, so the truth is somewhere between 500-750k.

the Wii is an epidemic.

While I agree they rounded, I don't think they would have rounded that much. This is either a case of them only giving info on a specific portion of the americas (ie the US) ...which I don't think the non-US Americas would account for 250k units....or VGC is off a bit.

I think the likely scenario here is that the US sold around 550k and perhaps the rest of the Americas were around 150k or so and VGC was off by a bit.

If the full Americas number was around 700k in actuality then 750k is still less than 10% off.

Nintendo figures are also only an estimation, so they could be off too. It goes without saying that VG Chartz is off a bit, it always is, as is any place that estimates numbers. I figure VGC is probably a little high, and Nintendo is probably a little low and not including Canada, so the actual numbers somewhere around 650-700k.
For a title that's as sure to have great legs like SMG that's an amazing start.

Ummm, that's weird, someone deleted my first post? Anyways, like I said, this is not bad, but actually a really great start. So what they didn't hit 750k, if this was any other game people would be going crazy if it sold 500k, I just think some people put too high of expectations for sales on the best rated games, it just doesnt always happen like that. Despite that, SMG deserves every sale it gets, AMAZING game.

Currently Playing:

PS4 - Killzone:SF and Assasins Creed 4

Changing channels with my voice: priceless!!!

I am from Canada and I bought 250k copies.
I am going to build a shrine with the game discs and pray to Mario every day.
/weird

Mario is doing extremely better in NA than Japan.

Sorry, I wanted to change the title so your post got deleted.

It is most likley the first week counted by NPD and it fits that vgc first weeks>npd weeks. And looking at comparison, VGC seems to have a more "hardcore" view than NPD. Way casual games are most of the time NPD>=VGC and hardcore games are most of the time VGC>NPD. (I'm not judging or saying one of them is right or wrong, it is just something that jumps you in the eye if you look at it)
