Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why did Wii Play become such a big hit?

The article is right. why spend more for a controller if they can buy it more cheaper alone?

I have played wii play and although I only like 4 games, the ones they mentioned and table tennis, is a nice fun game.

yeah the game couldn't sell the same alone, so I guess that's why Nintendo added a controller to catch the eye. But the truth is, lots of people like the game and is a very good one. Not great but not terrible either.

It was a great entry for people that used to play and stopped or for the ones that never played in their lives.

Honestly I never needed a new Wii Remote because when I got a Wii it came with 2 remotes in a bundle. When I needed a 3rd I got the cool Black Remote with the Motion+ bundle. I have tried Wii Play at a friends house and I enjoyed it. I don't need or want a new Remote so I refuse to pay $50 for Wii Play but if Wii Play was $10 alone I would buy it for sure. I would probably pay $20 for it alone as it was a decent game. my favorite game was the one when you had to find the Mii's!

Maybe sony will bundle Arc with some mini games.

I personally got it because of the controller.

Tanks was pure awesome, too.

It sold so much because most people buying a Wii said " I need a second controller, and this one comes with a game. No wait, 9 games!" The fact that lazer hockey and tanks are quite fun, some games are kind of fun and some games are entirely throw away doesn't have that much to do with it.

10 bucks for a retail game is a great value, even if that game ends up being only worth 10 bucks.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Well i guess the only way to know for sure, instead of writing a hypothetical article, would be to survey wii owners who purchased wii play.

Being bundled with a controller certainly didn't hurt it's sales, but I don't think it was the only factor.

I sometimes wonder: If Nintendo decided to bundle a Wii Remote with Zelda or Smash Bros, would those games have sold 27m? I find it hard to say yes.

Doesn't the Wii have a feature where you can look and see how much the average person plays a game (I rarely go on the Nintendo Channel, so I'm not sure)? If so, somebody check that out. If the game is played for 40 hours or something, then it sold because of the game. If the game is being played for an average of 3-4 hours, then it sold because of the controller.

Either way, most people agree that it is a mediocre game and it is already one of the best selling titles of forever. There are tons of $10 games. I think we know what makes Wii Play stand out.

Tanks is pure awesome. That game is the reason I got a second nunchuk. Worth the price of Wii Play alone. (Played a demo of a similar game on PSN, with more tanks and levels and online play, but without the pointer controls it was difficult and confusing)

I've even seen someone enjoy Fishing and the cow racing game. I'd probably love Laser Hockey if the controls weren't really messed up (When I turn my wrist 45 degrees the paddle should turn 45 degrees, not ninety frickin' degrees). Pool would also be great if there was more than just 9 ball, like maybe 8 ball, the game everyone plays all the time when they have a pool table. But, still worth it for tanks.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy
