Forums - Sales Discussion - Could someone do an analysis of Nov 17 US attach rates?

I could be wrong, but it sure seems like some of the Multi-plats saw a higher attach rate (or sales to install base) on some of the PS3 titles that were multi-platform.  That certainly has to be a good sign for third party developers...

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

Around the Network

Here's a top 10 list of the games released the week of Nov. 17 based on a ratio of units sold over system owners (i.e. percent of system owners that bought the game).

1. (WII) Super Mario Galaxy - 751,322 units (11.98%)
2. (PS3) Assassin's Creed - 226,177 units (9.32%)
3. (360) Assassin's Creed - 585,064 units (6.82%)
4. (WII) Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles - 128,109 units (2.04%)
5. (PS3) WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 - 48,712 units (2.01%)
6. (PS3) Need for Speed Pro Street - 47,905 units (1.97%)
7. (360) WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 - 129,554 units (1.51%)
8. (PS3) Kane & Lynch - 32,601 units (1.34%)
9. (360) Need for Speed Pro Street - 109,748 units (1.28%)
10. (360) Kane & Lynch - 93,147 units (1.09%)

Based on the install base, some games seem to be selling comparatively better on the PS3; however there are a couple things to keep in mind.
1. The games might still be selling relative to the install base but fewer people with the system ultimately yields fewer sales and,
2. Regardless of sales based on install base, sales are sales and the 360 is making 3rd party companies a lot of money.

Thanks.... I know it is all about the number of units sold in total but it is interesting to see slightly higher attach rates on the PS3 for some of the multi plats. That said, the 360 has several more titles out this fall that are competing for gamer's dollars and I'm sure that has something to do with it as well.

kn -

You must remember, it's Christmas, or near it. Since we're oh-so close to it, attach rates for some games don't go bannanas.

In the case of the PS3/360/Wii attach rates, it's pretty simple. The PS3 and Wii have a few select games that are going to be hotly selling, since the systems are so new. Assassains Creed on PS3, Super Mario Galaxy on Wii are the "must have" games of the season.

For the X360, the picture is vastly more muddy. Halo 3 is huge, but so many people have already bought it. Likewise, if you look at the charts, there are tons of older games stealing alot of revenue/unit sales from the bigger games. Heck, Viva Pinata keeps increasing sales week after week (went from not charting to almost 10k/wk sales in 3 weeks). So when you have a base that has alot more games vs. 2 bases that don't...The attach rates are going to be much higher.

The same can be said for the DS in Japan. No game has ever had insane attach ratios lately....Few games have done over 300k. But that's because the userbase is so huge, they are going out and picking up 2-3 other games before they get to the "must have" games. The must have games will still do great, but it's spread out over a long period of time.

Gears of War was the same way last year - it had a great attach ratio for the X360 because it was the holiday "must have" game (I think it was a 15% attach rate vs. SMGs 10%?). Some of the multi-ports were that way too.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I agree, there are far fewer games to choose from on the PS3 and that would naturally tend to increase the attach rate somewhat since there is less competition. I just found it interesting that games ARE actually beginning to sell on the PS3 fairly well relative to its install base. The problem is, of course, the install base is still very small and developers need more hardware in the wild to make money...

I'm still hoping my PS3 deal pans out and I'll know in a week or two hopefully. That said, I still have games for my 360 and Wii that I've not finished yet so it'll be a while before I have a game on the PS3 I'm truly wanting that I can't currently get. I would like to play with the built-in blu-ray player, however, since I now have a TV that can use it.
