Forums - Sales Discussion - So Final Fantasy XIII's western launch is less than Bad Company 2's launch?

You can see it in the charts. Combined both systems in both Americas and Others, Bad Company 2 sold 1,281,699 copies last week. This week Final Fantasy XIII sold 1,205,035 copies.

Now I'm not going to play analyst with these (especially since this could change with NPD data), save for noting that it does seem odd that a moderate hit series could have a debut so close to one of the big blockbuster series.

But it does seem that S-E's report about the fastest selling isn't true, even if FFXIII sells plenty.

EDIT: So the numbers for FFXIII got upgraded. Don't see that happen often or else I would have waited to see if the numbers stuck. As it is, both series are selling well, which was still a point from the beginning (just because it seemed as if FFXIII wasn't selling as well did not mean it was selling poorly).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Reason is because BC2 is an FPS and in the west especially in America people love shooters so much so i'm not suprised that BC2 sold more.

A shooter outsold a jRPG in the West. WOW!

I honestly don't understand the point in comparing these games. They have completely different target audiences.

Originally I would've guessed Final Fantasy woulda done much better but I think the first view reviews and all the talk about the game being so linear turned many potential sales away.

“Absolutely, we can do much more with it. I don’t know if we are even close to 50 percent of PlayStation 3’s power at this point,” said Asmussen about God of War 3.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

Apples to oranges is never a good comparison.

Final fantasy isn't that huge in the west. It never was.

Take the Ps2 ones first.

If you exclude Japanese sales (leaving only the west), the best selling Final Fantasy (FFX)sold 5 million. A quick check makes that the 9th best selling game on the Ps2. FFX-2 sold 2.8 million, and FFXII sold 3.2 million. That makes Final Fantasy XII roughly the 45th best selling and and Final Fantasy X-2 the roughly 60th best selling.

Final Fantasy isn't as big in the west as one might think. If we had properly looked at the numbers in advance, this shouldn't come as a huge shock.

Edit: I think it's completely fair to compare the sales of two titles on the same machines. It's not really apples and oranges, more along the lines of red apples vs green apples. Or apples vs pears.

SE's statement may be correct still, if they are talking about shipped numbers. FFXIII is a big title, retailers may have ordered too much.

BC2 got the better reviews of the two. FF13 is getting hammered everywhere.

BC2 will sell more hands down. It should get great sales for the coming couple months while I imagine the bulk of FF13 sales have already happened in NA.
