Forums - Gaming Discussion - Were you gaming in the 1980s?

Look at my nick. Look at my avatar.

I started gaming in the 1970s -- with a Unisonic Tournament 2000: http://www.computerhistory.org/collections/accession/102618713

In the 1980s, I got an Intellivision in 1982, a Coleco ADAM in 1984 (which I returned), a C-64 in 1984 (replaced the ADAM)). And my younger sister had an Atari 2600 in 1983.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Yes. I was gaming in the 70's actually.

I've been alive long enough to see the evolution of gaming from white blocks and knobs to HD and motion controls. It's pretty amazing actually.

Of course I was gaming in the 80s!

What I remember from that time:

- Playing all my games to death because we'd only get games on birthdays (mine and my brother's) and Christmas.
- Games being actually difficult.
- After playing an imported Japanese version of SMB3, I talked to my mom about the game even describing the cartridge extension (Japanese cartridges were smaller than ours). God knows how she found a store that sold imported games but instead of getting SMB3, she got SMB2 (Lost Levels in Super Mario All Star). I was really disappointed because I didn't get SMB3 but I never told her because I knew she had gone through a lot of trouble to find that game.

I was between this size:      .

And this size in the 80s (and no, that's not a picture of me):

My first 80's console was the Colecovision. It was a toss up between that and an Intellivision. But, since I was brand loyal to Coleco from my Telstar (my very first console) in the 70's I convinced my parents to go with Coleco again...

While many friends played pac-man, pitfall and others on the Atari consoles I was playing Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Lady Bug, etc. on Coleco and it was a blast with superior block graphics...

The other thing I remember was switching to the Commodore 64. It was popular in the mid-80's to switch from console gaming to computer gaming. And the Commodore 64 was a popular place to go. Pole Position, Blue Max, Lode Runner, Defender of the Crown, the Ultima's, etc.

I stayed in computer gaming until the Gamecube and PS2 caught my eye.

Late 80's, sparsely, (Atari/NES when I was a toddler, developing those motor skills) I remember vividly Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros. combo cartridge and Legacy of the Wizard. The earliest game memory I remember having is the Atari 2600 and E.T. I was young and didn't know any better.

Gaming in the 90's was my pinnacle perhaps, starting with the Sega Genesis and moving onto the Super Nintendo.

However, I always played computer games and will always cherish those DOS games.
