Forums - Sales Discussion - What exactly ARE the gamemarkets of the world?

Taking off on the recent "Japan" thread: What are all the markets of the world that have significant buyers of videogame products? Even PC gaming products? This is something I'm curious in. I mean nation by nation. I know there's: Japan USA Canada UK France Spain Germany Italy Netherlands Australia New Zealand Brazil Mexico South Africa Greece Russia (I've heard of them being big on PCs) What are all the countries that deal in videogames and/or PC games & how big are their markets? Compare to total population & say how much of them are gamebuyers. Do it by continent if you have to. Very interested in learning about gameplayers across the world. If you are from a certain country feel free to add your own insight and tell me how the markets work in your region too. John Lucas

hmm the nordic contrys has a total pop of almost 25 million and we aren't on the list?

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

Poland with almost 40 millions of citizens means nothing. Most successful game for PS2 - Killzone - 45k copies sold... no, this is not a first day sale - lifetime (platinum edition excluded). Piracy and high prices kill this market totally. The most successful game ever - The Sims 2 PC - 100k....

Well as ioi pointed out in the Japan thread, In the region of Asia, the second largest market is South Korea. And that's one thats likely to grow as Nintendo is expanding into it (albeit a slow and poorly executed expansion) After that, the largest seem to be Hong Kong and Taiwan.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Well i'm from brazil, and as i said on the other thread there is no official market for consoles here. Brazil has 180million citzens, but due to extreme disparity on the income, not even half of the population could afford a game console, but that still leaves quite a big chunk when compared with another small contries from europe for exemple. But the reason there is no official market here is because of piracy, so every console or game we buy here come from the us, europe or japan, normally from the us. But even if original software doesn't sell much here, the consoles are quite popular, there are no official numbers, but the snes was big some years ago, every body had one, and they weren't that expensive, and you can still find people buying ps1 and games somewhere. But now the ps2 is the one that sells most, of course everybody only buys piracy games, but i believe there are at least 1million ps2 here, but i believe it could be around 2 million. The gameboy color or advance also sells pretty well, due to piracy again, i believe there is a big number of gameboys out there. But game consoles that are harder to mod and harder to find pirate games are really rare around here. I live in a small city of 300mil hab, and i only know about 1 guy with a ps3, and i have a wii, but even on bigger cities, like sao paulo or rio de janeiro, its just people who are really into gaming that buy expensive consoles and original games. As i posted on the other topic the prices here for imported consoles are the following Old gen: Gamecube = 500 reais = 200 dollars Ps2 already modded with 10 pirate games = 800 reais = 300 dollars Gamecube game = 150 reais = 60 dollars Ps2 pirate game = 10 reais = 4 dollars Next Gen: Wii = 1200 reais = 500 Dollars X360 = 1500 reais = 600 Dollars Ps3 = 2500 reais = 1100 dollars Wii games = same as Gamecube X360 and ps3 games = 250 reais = 100 dollars Portable: Ds = 500 reais = 200 dollars Psp = 900 reais = 350 dollars So as a poor country, people are able to pay 300 dollars for a playstation, but its impossible to buy the games for most people, that is why only consoles with pirates games sell around here, and that is why there is no official market. On the PC side there are officially launched here pc games, when brand new they retail for 99 reais, around 40 dollars, which is a good price, and when old they become really cheap, so some people buy original pc games, since they arent so expensive, but it is really hard to track down any numbers about it.

@heihei so it means that everyone in Brazil has a modded Wii

No idea but Nintendo doesn't exist here. Microsoft looks a bit better. PS2 has 450k user-base. GC is maybe 1/20 of this number so games sales must be really poor. There was a major survey some time ago in Poland about system of choice. Which console are you going to buy? PS3 - 70% Xbox360 - 22% Wii - 8%

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
