When I look at these games... Is there any JRPG, that don´t start with "Final Fantasy", or "Kingdom Hearts", that sold at least million?

Nearly all my favourite games are here!.

That's because JRPG games do not sell well here. There's just something with the format of how they are made (and the animeish look) that turns people off.

And they rarely ever get advertised.

Moreso the fact that they never get advertised.

Compare these two games for US Sales:

Dragon Ball Budokai - 2.04 Million

Dragon Quest VIII - 0.60 Million

Both games have the exact same character design, cel shaded style and cater to similar markets.  In fact, Dragon Quest appeals to even broader markets, hitting on a much more general market than your typical JRPG and more than just the typical Anime fan.  But the fact remains, it should have been a simple matter for them to slap a simple sticker on the box that said 'from the creators of Dragon Ball and Chrono Trigger' and it could have sold like candy.  Not to mention advertised it on TV in a similar fashion.  Yet why did Dragon Quest VIII, one of the higher budget games from the PS2, only sell 600,000 units, while Dragon Ball Budokai sold over 2 MILLION?  The simple difference in advertising.

DBZ : MONSTRUOUS BRANDNAME WAY BEYOND videogaming

Dragon quest : non event outside japan videogaming market

I dont know for the advertising, but just in term of brand : THERE IS A BIG DFFERENCE

Uh...yeah.  And how do you think Dragon Ball got that big?  Through advertising on TV.  It was the same with Pokemon.  You think Pokemon sold 11 million copies of the first game purely by chance?  No, they pounded America with mass marketing and hype, through the use of commercials, promotions, magazine ads and hyping their own cartoon show.  The same way Dragon Ball did it.

Dragon Quest has done next to nothing in the way of marketing.  And as such, has hardly any sales to show for it.

I'm just confirming the statement that JRPGs are hardly advertised here in America.  Even one as big as Dragon Quest (SquareEnix second biggest seller).

DBZ was an ... anime from japan (you know DBZ right ?)

I was on TV but not as advertising, it was on TV as a TV product (a cartoon/anime) that is why the brand is so strong !

I dont call this "marketing support for a game"

Dragon Ball is put on TV.  TV show is advertized.  It becomes popular.  Products (including games) are made based on the show.  Those games are advertised on TV.  The increasing cycle of advertising every piece of Dragon Ball media and merchandize increases the Dragon Ball brand name.  And the games sell in the millions as a result.

Pokemon followed the same cycle.

Dragon Quest VIII however was released 'cold'.  With hardly any advertising.  Hence its lower sales.  And what little advertising it got was poorly placed and not targeting the markets it should have been.  And subsequent games had no advertising (unlike games such as Pokemon and the Dragon Ball based games, which all have good advertising behind them).

Both the Dragon Ball anime and games got significant advertising, and still do.  Whereas Dragon Quest has had next to no advertising over its entire 20 year existence outside of Japan.  It is the perfect parallel example of how to build brand name recognition between two similar products, which should be targeting the same market.

And yes, I know what Dragon Ball Z is.  Hence why I referenced the fact that both Dragon Ball and Dragon Quest had the same character designer and should be marketed to the same types of people.  You know...the basis of my entire point.
