Bear in mind, if we are talking about 'gaming' and not just console gaming, then Microsoft publishes a VAST number of PC games. They are a gaming giant on par with Sony, as they are dominating Sony in NA consoles, and their PC game publishing competes with Sony's oversea's dominance.

Change that "publishes" to "published" and your statement would be more accurate. I can't think of a full budget PC game Microsoft has published since 2007. Flight Sim is gone, Big Huge games was sold and Ensemble was disbanded. Gears 2, Halo 3 and Fable 2 haven't seen any PC releases even though they're prevoius iterations had. MS have solely focused on the 360 this gen and gradually pulling PC support. Last year MS published on the PC (according to MGS wiki page):

  •
    • Tinker
    • Osmos
    • World of Goo

1 puzzle game, and 2 indie Games for Windows Live titles. In 2008 I don't think they published a single game. In fact, MS have done more to try to kill PC gaming this gen than any other publisher (which is saying alot considering some of the stupid DRM schemes) by adding Games for Windows Live with all of 2 games, having to log in just to save your game and then trying to charge PC gamers to play online. Then there was the crap with DirectX10 being Vista only when you could force all the extras on XP. OK, I'll stop ranting now.

The only segment where MS is not as big as Sony are handhelds, because they are not in that business.

So in 1st party development they are equall ? and they both own equal amount of game franchises ? or they publish equal amount of games.

LMFAO

Short answer? No.

Long answer?

Sony = PSP , Microsoft = nothing

SCE > MGS

Aside from the high sales of the PS1 and the PS2, the PS3 has been selling faster in the same time period than the Xbox 360.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

You know this site is ran by Sony fans when they choose "Not even close", to them i say

"Who has a 5 million lead? Aww to soon??" then i LOL

well to be fair the question is Sony Vs MS and NOT PS3 vs X360.Sony had almost 40% of revenue in gaming last week whereas MS had only 13 %.

to you I say

"who has 3 platforms on the market???" :P

True, but the brand power is what the OP was talking about.

Xbox and GFWL vs PS3 and ?? (PSP is just about to die and so is the PS2)

Xbox brand is equal with the Playstation brand.

In the US and UK. Worldwide it appears it has yet to become as big as the Playstation brand.

Microsoft will never match Sony's past achievements in this industry. But right now they're about equal in the console market.

Their first party still sucks though.

Past achievements aren't the most important factor to brand power though, which is essentially what this thread is actually about. There are multiple facets of "brand power" that people are continually bringing up, 1st party support, sales, etc. In the end though, the only really important thing is recognition. People who are new to gaming don't know and don't give a shit about how much the PS2 sold. Just like most of them haven't even heard of Sega, when in the past it was mostly about Sega vs. Nintendo. Anything can happen, and if Sony makes another big mistake and loses more money with a PS4, there likely won't be a PS5 and Sony will go the path of Sega.

In America, MS has FAR more recognition. This is mostly shown in the sales numbers. Yes, Sony has Blu-ray/superior hardware, that's nice, but if it's not selling more than the Xbox 360, it doesn't matter (it's not in case you didn't know). MS has more of a name here (in America) and that = brand power.

Still, overall, I think Sony has a slight lead. I emphasize slight because I believe it could change within this year. Natal + WM7 could essentially catapult MS far ahead of Sony. Here I emphasize could because Move could put Sony out of reach. Only time will give that answer.

MS will most likely never penetrate the Japanese market unless Sony goes bankrupt. Also, to hold that against MS in terms of brand power is almost unfair, since Japanese have continually shown strong nationalist tendencies with the products they purchase. Essentially, if they have a choice been a good Japanese product, and a cheaper, equally or almost as good non-Japanese product, they will still probably choose the Japanese product. If I had mroe time, I'd try to find some of the articles I've read on this subject.

Tell me please, if they are equall why is the more expensive product sellin more ?

Xbox brand is still small compared to PlayStation. I voted ''they are getting there''

Because it was over priced at the start of this generation? and its a good deal?

You think a Ferrari selling at $300 will out sell a $300 Honda with some racing parts on it? or even the $200 Basic Honda

Of course the Ferrari will out sell them both despite being more expensive.

@Scoobes

What is World Wide?

PS2 alone doubled the sales of Xbox and Xbox 360 together
