Forums - Gaming Discussion - At the end, is FFXIII good enough or not?

It's brilliant

There are no sidequests for the first 20 hours, but then it opens up, and as I understand there are plenty of post-game things to do. Not quite as much as FFX, but better than most, certainly 100 hours of entertainment

The eidelons are fairly useless, like aeons in FFX, but that didn't harm the game

The main point, is that the battle system is just fantastic. It is linear, but still very fun, and it does open up towards the end

i wouldnt say so, if you fight side by side with one long enough to fill your Metamorphosis Bar, they can deal 350.000-400.000 damage easilly, and i have some things to say about the BS:

its good, but sometimes you feel dumb, because the party may stand in the most stupid position possible. sometimes i just thought 'move 2 goddamn steps to the right..'.. and sometimes, a death spell on your leader feels just cheap. but whatever.

@the game itself:

i think the linearity itself isnt a problem, as 10 was almost the same, but even the TOWNS (not the traditional ones..) are linear. i mean wtf?

but Overall, the Story told is one of the better ones i saw the last Years, it cant match VII+VIII+IX, but it laughs about the one from XII. i WOULD give it a try, FFXIII is not perfect, but it made a huge step in the right direction.

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

Oh that does annoy me. Your character moves about on the battlefield, but it is out of your control, and there are quite a few area sensitive spells, and if you can't control these things, how is that fair?

I'll give my opinion on it. And I have loved all Final Fantasy's even the ones people hate. But I do not like Final Fantasy 13, it is true the beginning is boring. And if you are really willing to play for 20 more hours then good luck to you, I did but only because the sphere grid like leveling system is addictive to me. You can grind later on, but it gets boring after awhile. All you do in this game is swap your fighting stance and then hit auto battle. It's hard to come up with a stratagy during battle because you don't get time to pick what you want. The bosses are really hard, and even some regular fights, maybe they arent necessarily hard, but they take forever. You usually have to do what you need to for the first part of the fight to figure out how to kill the boss then you hit retry and start the battle over again more prepaired.

It is a very linear and perdictable game, so far the storyline is very perdictable and find myself saying the lines before they do. And this is the first time I've played it. Basically what you do is run a straight path, with the illusion that there is more than a straight path, for a few hours then a boss battle. After that a new chapter happens, you run another straight line, then another boss battle, oh and maybe a fight with your summon. Even at 20 hours it's only an illusion thinking you are more open up as you get to the surface of Pulse. The mini games are given to you by these flooting things on Pulse. I didn't do them because I don't like doing things on my first run through, I like getting to the end of the game  and come back to complete it. And I'm not sure if I can go back. Oh, and summons are helpful, Odin has helped me in some regular fights that would have been imposible any other way, for me at least.

I've only rented the game, and I'm glad I did. Give it a rent before you buy it. You may like it, but just as there are those who like it, there are other who hate it, and not without reason. I'll be taking the game back tuesday, I still need to show a friend the game because he loves Final Fantasy.

Lol, funny you say that about how predictable the storyline is! I'm playing the game with some buddies here from my dorm and the other night we were guessing what the characters were gonna say before they said and 90% of the time we got it right! I forgot to add t hat the game is typical japanese cheeseness and WTF is the deal with chocobos living in people's heads?!? Dumbest thing ever.

#1. ) Yes you can most definitely grind. In many early areas you can run from one end of an area back to the other and enemies respawn. In one area I just finished you were able to switch the area from day to night and every time you did the area's enemies respawned. Also in another area enemies respawned each time I took the elevator down and then back up again. So yes, it is very possible to grind.

#2.) The battle system is not really a bad Star Ocean mixed with turn-based Final Fantasy's of old. Even though you only control one character it is still a ton of fun and you still get to choose your attacks, magic, summons, items, etc... with the usual turn based style menus you are accustomed to.

#3.) As for the camera, it is really no different than any other one. The view is set behind your character as usual and you're always free to rotate the camera if you wish using the right analog. of course once you start running it moves back to being behind your character. It's not bad what so ever.

I also want to know if there are any mini-games.

Other than the battle system, which is awesome, this game so far feels like FFX to me, minus the towns which isn't all that bad so far. The game is one a fan of the FFX and before that would most likely enjoy without a doubt.

I gave in and got it instead of waiting for the Chinese version, I like the combat system better than all previous FF since I stopped using auto attack by the 10th fight and started doing shift setups right as it became an option to use and switch a lot in different battles. Story wise it's meh so far since I'm not far in. JRPGs are generally pretty linear so I'm not going to bitch about that, the lvling up system I do like, you control you stats more on where you want to be more until well, you max everything out lol.

Yeah I know. This game would have been so much better if Sazh just stuck it in his pocket instead.

For me, FF13 is similar to FF10. So if you really liked 10, you will love 13.

There's just no towns, but I honestly do not mind. It's worth the purchase.

In my opinion, 13 has the best battle system. It's really fun and refreshing once you get the hang of it. Just know that to me and most people I talked to, the first 2 hours are really boring, but then once you get to use Paradigm shift and leveling up, it will be a blast.

FF12 was over rated, and FF13 only got low scores because Western reviewers are too used to being in a open world. This game should have received plenty of low 9's instead of 8.5's.
