Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island

NOTE: I don't want this to be a discussion about which game is better because this is personal taste. As I already mentioned in another thread, I'm a little nostalgic today, therefore this thread about two platforming grandfathers. Anyways, I recently read a feature about Mario and his history, and one thing caught my interest in it. It was that apparently, Miyamoto was a little upset because Donkey Kong Country games sold better than Yoshi's Island, and he attributed that mainly to the superior graphics of those games. In my opinion, this is a little too simple because I personally prefer the three DKC games over Yoshi's Island, but as I said, that's not the thing I want to discuss about. The important thing for me is that I see all those four games on the same level of greatness more or less, but a lot of People seem to think that Yoshi's Island is way superior. So I ask what do you think? Is Donkey Kong Country also one of the platforming-masterpieces or is this title exclusive to Miyamoto's Mario games?

The first one was great... the second one was ok, the third one... meh

Yoshi's Island was ok, dont know why, but I preffer DKC and DKQ over Yoshi's Island

By me:

I agree that the first one was the best and the second one was better than the third one, but I think they were quite close in quality.

However, a lot of people are calling YI the best 2D-Platfomer ever and I just can't agree with that...

I think that Donkey Kong Country is a mix of Sonic ( gameplay ) speed and Mario platforming.
It has an enjoyble gameplay overall and fantastic music and graphic ( although I prefer Yoshi's Island artistic graphic ).
Plus DKC had an english style/humor that is different from Japanese's.
Overall I think that DKC is a really great platform.

Yoshi Island showed at that time the limits achieved by the genre ( 2D platforming) , IMO.
So althought be an improvement overall of Super Mario World I prefer the later ( or Super Mario Bros 3 ) thanks to his simplicity.

However, Miyamoto later retreat his statement about DKC. He said that he was underpreassure by Nintendo to deliver a worthy sequel to SMW

OT : Someone has played to DK Jungle Beat ? How is it ? I'm just curious because it was developed by EAD Tokio , maker of SMG

That is the GC game with the music right?  If it is that one,  don't buy it.  It is fun for a time but gets quite boring.

Yeah I played it but I didn't like it too much. The platforming itself was ok, but there were some things I disliked, for example that you had to collect something (I'm not sure anymore what it was) to get medals and if you didn't collect enough, you couldn't proceed to the next level.

And what I felt was even worse is that they did not take any relations to the Country games into this game. You could only play as Donkey, most enemies were new and the levels looked completely different. And of course there was absolutely nothing of the humour you mentioned, so it did just not feel like a Donkey Kong game to me and that was a huge disappointment for me because my first home console game was DKC and I have always been a huge fan of the series.

For me Yoshi's Island will always be one of the best during the peak of the platforming genre. Donkey Kong was fabulous but it was too caught up in the SGI hype-train and many people were unable to look past that for better or worse. I agree it should be up there when you talk about platforming, particularly when talking about Nintendo. But unfortunately when people look back at games that had groudbreaking graphics the games don't hold their luster. Now games that make a name for themselves on game play will stay in people's hearts forever. I am not saying DK didn't have the but the same hype that helped drive them now tarnishes the memory.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

i havent played yoshis island so i am waiting for it to release in the virtual console

YI - good gameplay, good graphics, a ton of content (game is about as long as all DKC games combined). For some reason though I prefer the DKC games.

It's strange, Rol, I think the same as you. I mean , I know that YI is surely a great platform game with excelent   gameplay but for some obscure motive I prefer the simplicity of DKC.

I had sold my SNES prior to either of these games coming out. I did buy Donkey Kong Country on the VC and have played it quite a bit. Haven't beating it yet. Always get to wrapped up in some current Wii game. I definitely think it is an awesome game and well worth the $$.

I have never played or even seen Yoshi's Island.
