Something more interesting

Heh. I like the

"Buy it used, and you'll have to fork over an additional $20 (which goes straight into the publisher's pocket) if you want to play online."

like it's such a terrible thing that the money goes to the publisher of the game. Oh no, anyone but them.

To muckrake about what publishers are now doing to combat used game sales.  Not sure why anyone expects publishers to NOT find ways to stop people from buying used and buy new copies of the game.  They will figure out the right approach and get people to buy new, or get a cut of sales of old games.

I hope that used game sales are harder in the future.

Functionally there is no difference between buying used games and pirating games except when you buy used games gamestop takes a slice. As far as the publisher is concerned they're identical in that they see 0 dollars they can use to make more games.

Anything the publishers do to ruin the used game trade I'm 1000% in favor of.

Used games in stores are retarded. Seriously it's funny seeing a new game for $19.99 then a used game for $17.99 because a $2 difference is so huge. That's why used games online are better.

If you're going to buy a used game online or off you might as well just go torrent the game.  At least then you wouldn't be facilitating the used game market's existence.  Buying used games just subsidizes continued effective piracy done by gamestop et all.

I guess that nobody rents games anymore, is that true?

The developers only get a cut on the initial sale, but nothing from then on.

When demand drops, the store must then sell their now extra copies, to make room for the newer games. Is that ok? Opinions?

In Japan, there are no rental stores, but every game has a demo disc that is available to most gamers. They also have a huge second hand market over there, and I don't hear the developers crying the blues over that.

Here, most console specific magazines contain a demo disc with a few games on them, but not all of the game releases are included. I guess that gamers today must have an endless supply of money to be able to buy only new copies of games they want to play.

I am expecting developers (and publishers want to live in the following world):

It is a world where development costs increase at a rate of 5 times that of inflation, with more and more downloadable content sold, and also a believe that everyone is so fixated on videogames, that they will all end up dropping everything else, including buying toilet paper, so they can keep consuming more and more videogames.  They don't even need to play them, just buy them and the expansions.  The developers don't want to face the need to keep costs down, and create games with new play mechanics and genres people would want, but haven't tried yet.  They want to have the path with an EA tells them to make a God of War knockoff, but reskin it with a theme from the Christian religion, and then show the world how awesome the effects are, and also have the publishers run clever ad campaigns that include a Catholic mass simulator.  Build a different hack and slash based on a Christian piece of literature?  Nah, that would be too much work, and market demographics can't show if it would sell.

Folks, this is NOT lazy, it is GREEDY.

i'd much prefer if the 20$ came outa my pocket and went to, well...back in my pocket (or the other pocket if the bill wants a change of scenery or something)

i for one, rarely buy used games. but hey, stores don't hold onto games forever. when i bought my gamecube, i desperately looked all over for REmake to no avail. finally one day, i walk into ebgames (and was swarmed by a legion of super expensive used games) and luckily, lo and behold, REmake sitting there on the shelf waiting for me to snatch it before the old lady who was wobbling her way toward it.

I do not want to be paying extra or have to deal with any problems for a game the company, developer or publisher or whoever don't have any right to anymore. That product was purchased, they got what they wanted for it. that person sold it which they had every right to. now dun come after me whining for more money. i don't see ferrari whining for a piece of the increased value of an old car sold on the used market or mcdonald's charging the toilet for the double cheeseburger with bacon i had earlier today

That would be fantastic.
