Wow, great stuff.

As far as I read somewhere, you need to have a specific angle to see the 3D, which is absolutely perfect for a handheld that oney one person plays at a time.

And yes, OLED is organic, as opposed to the rather crystalline normal LEDs, which makes for muh higer resolution and les space used. Sony does plenty of OLED already. But then I guess so do many others.

No, this tech can be viewed by people looking over your shoulder and at any angle.

OLED is great and all 1 million to 1 contrast, less than a millisecond response time, etc but it's not quite ready yet.

"While an OLED will consume around 40% of the power of an LCD displaying an image which is primarily black, for the majority of images, it will consume 60–80% of the power of an LCD - however it can use over three times as much power to display an image with a white background[53] such as a document or website. This can lead to disappointing real-world battery life in mobile devices."

Nintendo games tend to be pretty bright and colorful. This tech can still be done with LCD so it could go either way.

There's a lot going on with 3D

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

Two overlayed screens makes a lot of sense for 3DS all things considered.

So does anything that uses a camera to let display auto adjust itself to provide 3D to the viewers perspective.

@Patjaun32 Hmm that actually sounds even better than what I came up with. Maybe more practical as well. We'll just have to take a wait and see for the details.

Either way it involves overlayed screens.

Yeah we'd get to know the numbers before the units have even been sold =P

This is how the new DS will work since it's Sharp technology. Since you would be holding it close due to it being a handheld, it would be in full effect, and devs can switch inbetween 2D and 3D modes anytime in their game via software switches to the hardware.

You read it here first.
About the only thing the OP didn't nail was the name.

Mike from Morgantown

The 3DS name did cross my mind but it didn't really sound like a name that would make sense. It's fine though because it doesn't look like it's going to be the final name anyways.

The rumor that said the gap between the two screens would be extremely small, almost seamless all of a sudden has a whole new connotation to it now huh lol.

I wonder if this auto 3D effect will be done by popping the image out of the screen, or by doing inner depth "popping" the image even more inside the screen.

If it is done by the second way, I think that a huge letdown for me...

It seems DSi can do that already, so probably not.
