Forums - Nintendo Discussion - (Rumor from GDC) DS specs- Bigger screens and Gamecube-like structure

Seems like this could be the surprise for the E3.

The development kit is said to be comparable in power to the GameCube. Game creators who are familiar with the GameCube or Wii will be right at home crafting games for the new handheld. Developers busy working on games said there isn’t much of a learning curve.

Additionally, an accelerometer is said to be incorporated into the handheld. If you’ve toyed around with pretty much any smart phone, you’re familiar with the screen tilting action. We imagine this will lead to many balance beam and pinball minigames.

These game creators said the games for the new handheld will be completed by the end of the year. Whether Nintendo releases the unit by then is still mysterious. However, enigmatic sources say that we might see an E3 2010 announcement and a release later this year.

Could be FUD, but honestly I think it's time.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

a portable Gamecube? Count me in

Well..... it has been six years.

Maybe.... maybe.... for a 2011 release. The DS isn't slowing down yet, but Nintendo might be anticipating it.

Too soon. I'm still waiting for those DSi exclusive games. ;__;

Pixel Art can be fun.

I could see a March 2011 thing happening.
So it will have motion sensing, tilt, a microphone, touchscreen, and Gamecube-like strength, with Nintendo first-party titles and 3rd parties on the loom?
................

If the next DS will be that strong.....the next Wii should be slightly above PS3 level.

I think it'll be this year.

The DSi was in part a defensive co-opt against cheap downloadables, as are available on more portable devices these days. While I don't think the iphone will disrupt Nintendo they are right to be cautious.

But the DSi doesn't have the advantages for cheap downloadables to really work to their potential. The payment methods on DSi are not as convenient as on others, and the connection methods are both a barrier to entry and tied down.

This is why I expect a network integrated DS soon.

What do you mean by network integrated?

Like, mobile phone network. But not actually being a phone (that would hamper design).

Eeeugh

I don't know if I would like that very much. I'd hope, at least, for an option to just hook it up to my own wireless network. Last think I need is a data plan for my DS....
