Now, this thread is of course purely speculative, and not based on any rumours. It'd be nice if you could explain your reasoning, too.

Does anyone here think we might see the GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine remade as a launch title for DS's successor? Before you just go shouting yes, no, or 'OMG I HATE SUNSHINEZ!!1!', just think about it. Nintendo have a habit of remaking/re-launching games, and especially Mario games:

- The NES's Super Mario Bros., SMB 2 and SMB 3 were all remade and released for the SNES in the Super Mario All-Stars package.

- Later, the same NES SMB was tweaked and re-released and Super Mario Bros Deluxe for GameBoy Color.

- When the GameBoy Advance launched, it did so with the launch title Super Mario Advance, a remake of the SNES All-Stars version of SMB 2, which was itself a remake of the NES SMB 2 (which, incidentally, was in turn an altered version of the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic, 'cos Nintendo feared the Japanese SMB2 would be too difficult for Westerners. So it was a remake of a remake of a remake, hmm.) In similar fashion, we saw releases of remakes of Super Mario World (SMA2), Yoshi's Island (SMA3) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (SMA4). All of these released for the GBA.

- DS launched with a remake of Super Mario 64, aptly titled Super Mario 64 DS.

- On a lesser note, Nintendo also released the GameCube's Mario Power Tennis as a NPC title for Wii.

... Now, for some further points in favor of a Sunshine remake, Nintendo hasn't released a NPC version of the game, and it doesn't look like they ever will. GameCube titles don't appear on the Virtual Console of the Wii either. The argument that Sunshine may or may not have been a very loved game doesn't really hold water, either, since Nintendo launched the GBA with a Super Mario Bros. 2 remake, which is universally considered to be one of the weakest entries in the series. Besides, the game has garnered glowing reviews almost without exception, with a metascore of 92, including quite a lot of 100's.

I think it's likely. DS2 or whatever it'll be called will be significantly more powerful than DS, obviously. Just how much remains to be seen, but if I had to guess, I'd put it somewhere around GameCube level, maybe even Wii. Plenty of horsepower, then.

Of course we all know 2D Mario sells extremely well, too, judging from the recent NSMBW, but I still feel a 3D Mario would be one of the ways in which Nintendo could really show off a new system. And Sunshine seems like ans obvious candidate, having been released long enough ago to be a classic, too.

So, thoughts?

No. I love Sunshine to death but it's not a game I would want to play on a handheld.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I really would hope not. They have many great games they could choose from. They could even just make a new one and not use any redone games. Mario Sunshine would just make me wait longer till a game I actually liked or might like came out.

I wouldn't really want it to, and I severely doubt it'll happen.

Why though?

I love Sunshine, but I'd rather a new experience then a remake.

Mario 64 is legendary because it took the series, and a large chunk of gaming as a whole, into 3D. It was the quintessential game for the N64, and that's why they ported it to launch with the DS.

Sunshine is, whether you like the game, dislike the game, love the game or hate the game, pretty much just another game.

I know, and good point. Still, did you read the OP?

GBA launched with a Mario remake of a remake of a remake, and one that's considered to be one of the, if not the single weakest Mario games, at that. Besides, strong launch games aren't a rule set in stone for Nintendo. Just look at the GameCube, for example.

I'd rather see a portable Wind Waker or Ocarina of Time. Heck, Metroid Prime portable (as long as it's better than Hunters) would be better. Sunshine is pretty far down on my list of games I want made portable. Would Nintendo make it? Maybe, but not as a launch title.

Your logic is sound, but I think they'd have trouble letting portable players control the water device on Mario's back, especially if DS2 is dual-screened.
