Forums - General Discussion - Why do people in the UK often pretend they're not in Europe?

I'm British and I would gladly accept that Britain I part of Europe... Heck, I welcome it.

We all realise that Britain is part of Europe. But like everyone has said, it's an island nation. It's more detached from the EU than most other European countries, the currency is still different, many of the traditions are still traditionally British, and unlike the only other large island nation Iceland, the UK is a large and powerful country which held its own before the formation of the EU, and has stronger ties to America than any other country in Europe, really.

None of this would be relevant, of course, without the island part. It's because of the detachment from the EU that we don't use the Euro, not the other way around.

I know many British people hate the EU, but Europe is not the same thing as EU. So what's up with that?

Wake up already. You're part of Europe.

Thank you for telling me where I live!

Its purely a historical thing.  For hundreds of years between being kicked out of France, England (and later Britain) has always attempted to distance istelf from 'European' matters, prefering to concentrate on trade, colonies and the Empire.  Old habits die hard.

And it will be a cold day in hell before I refer to myself as European instead of English and British.

some points on that:

1) I dont think the French or Germans refer to themselves as "european", they just accept the fact that they are in the continent of Europe

2) if people ask me my nationality, I say "English", being English does not make me any less part of Europe though, its just the correct answer to the question, though "British" or "European" would both be correct answers, though would not be specific.

You're certainly wrong with this thesis

Its mentality has been like that for quite a while.
Seems a bit closer these days, but not that long ago the mood was generally (and within the government) sort of like europe?LALALALALALAeuropeWHAT.I.CAN'T.HEAR.YOUlalalalala.

The history bit is highly debatable, there is at the very least the Roman Empire to mention before that. Though it's still the last of the great powers... not counting Germany in this one, they did set themselves up for some bad feedback.

I'm not sure how much the island factor has contributed. It's not really something like Japan where nobody conquered it much, meddled in it and where things were pretty isolated both ways for a long time.

It's probably because of soccer (I think y'all say football) again.

It's because Europe is associated with the European Union, and a lot of British people are against the union. Also, most people are too lazy to say "the UK and mainland Europe," so they just say "the UK and Europe."

Aab, but Europe is also big on football (soccer). So unless viewed simply as competition, that ought to be a unifying factor.
Though British football fans have some insane reputation in Europe.

I think of UK by itself and not a part of Europe and I am in the US.

2. You might be interested to know that almost all European countries have their own language too. This doesn't make the UK unique. Geez did I really have to point this out?

4. Greece for example?

5. What does this have to do with anything anyway?
