Forums - Sales Discussion - The Japanese Console Market

Rolstoppable makes very good points. Also keep in mind that Wii has become a cultural phenomenon in NA and other territories and because of that, those markets are going to continue to grow, also helping make the Japan market seem like a smaller percentage.

Really? You get any information on whatever game is causing that re-birth? Please don't tell me it's MMOs...

WoW and Sims is my guess.

yep this could be a reason

Hey rol, i dont think your predictions are gonna come true O.o

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

When taking handhelds into consideration and compared to UK, things doesn't look bad, since Japan is about twice the size of UK. Energy prices are at all time high, low yen and Japan is heading to a recession.
Maybe those reasons are enough.

I would be interested in seeing software sales overall between regions. Especially between UK and Japan.

What do you mean by rebirth, in order for something to rebirth, it needs to be born in the first place.

There was always a "general" fear that the Wii would struggle in Japan - as it would be overshadowed by the DS.

While it launched strong, and had a pretty good year (as said - 4m sales is NOT bad) - I wonder if it (and all other consoles) will continue to slow, while the DS continues to dominate.

In many ways, the best thing Ninty could do in Japan is further link the DS & Wii devices. I think it could be a significant boost when they launch the "DS demo channel" on the Wii.

The Wii needs WiiFit - a truly evolutionary "game", and one that will definitely appeal to the Japanese psyche. The PS3 really needs a next-gen FF (or MGS) - something really different, and lifting the perception of games to the next level.

People have basically become bored - games are too derivative, people want something REALLY different out of a next-gen console.

WiiSports is the perfect example. Its a truly different piece of software - and has sold almost 2.2m in 12 months. Its selling at a *60%* attach rate - which is completely astounding, for non-packed in software.

Basically - most people are buying the Wii to play WiiSports - a different/new game.

I didnt know that a sports title was a new and fresh idea.

The people at EA sports must be proud of themselves, from 20 years ago.

If SMG flop generated so many gloomy threads I don't want to think what will happen after Wii fit failure. You guys are unprapered for such situation. There won't be revoluion. Wii-Fit won't deliver. Situation in Japan is clear for me -there are core gamers who buy PS3/PSP or DS and casuals who bought Wii for Wii-Sports, Wii-play and party games.

... when I read your sig I think that stupid predictions become a trademark of this site...

Neither do I. Well, the first one could become true if Nintendo ships about 4 million Wiis to america in November and December combined. Unlikely, because europe needs quite a lot of Wiis too.

I dont see how you could of predicted it the way it anyone (possiblely the first one, but the second one)

I mean the 360 is most likely to sell near 2 million in nov-dec alone, not including all the other months O.O

This isn't a discussion about individual consoles. It's about the overall market. Please keep it on topic.
