Forums - Sales Discussion - The Japanese Console Market

I posted these numbers on theSource's Japan preview, but I thought it's worthy of its own thread. Adding up the weekly numbers for all consoles, Wii+360+PS3+PS2:

NA = 492k
Others = 292k (UK = 73k)
Japan = 111k

These numbers kind of shocked me at how bad the market in Japan has gotten.  The UK could beat Japan soon. Holiday sales could literally swallow Japan.

Right now Japan only represents 13% of the global market. With holiday sales, it could very well drop to below 10% of the global market, as Japan doesn't celebrate as much as the rest of the world.

Joe, its a matter of how you look at growth. The console market may shrink but the handheld market will only grow.

The picture isn't a whole lot different when you include the handhelds.

NA = 718k
Others = 606k (UK = 153k)
Japan = 251k

So Japan is under 16% of the global market.

Sure its a small but still important branch of the market, but people are exagerrating the Wii's weakness, because they have forgotten the past (look at the PS2 in fall 2000)

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Does this mean the Japanese market is shrinking? This is pretty bad if you ask me. Even with Japan buying the DS in droves, they still can't beat Other. So the question is how will the companies shift this?

But was this a supply or demand problem? The current situation is solely due to demand.

Oh btw, the re-birth of PC gaming is also making consoles suffer.

 Selling 3000 one week almost a year after launch is not a supply issue, PS2 did that in november-december 2000

Are you sure? My understanding that supply was diverted to the other markets for their launches.

Really? You get any information on whatever game is causing that re-birth? Please don't tell me it's MMOs...
