Capital Punishment: For or Against?

For. Let them burn in hell 16 34.78%

Against. They could be innocent. 24 52.17%

Candy!!! 6 13.04%

Total:46

Against. It makes our modern justice seem like crude revenge.

And any arguments of cost is putting a monetary value to human life (I remember in my high school's Honors American history class, some kids actually used the high R&D costs of the atomic bombs as justification for dropping it in WWII >.

Anything that will save tax dollars/euros/pounds etc. is worth it as long as it is done quickly, and does not clog up the court system.

based on that we should have total anarchy...how better to save tax money than buy having no laws, no army, no government?

(im not advocating this at all, im pointing out a flaw in his reasoning)

I was half joking, yet it is better to not waste tax dollars on the worst criminals. I think the fact the US has the most imprisoned people in the world does not help us at all. Either we need to find a better solution besides imprisonment or we need to use lethal means on the most inhuman criminals.

AGAINST! Go to 5:24, there IS a better way.

So the moral of the story is, if I am going to commit crime, do it in Norway?

I'd love it the government had the ability to murder me.

We would be one step closer to a dictatorship, and frankly, that's my kind of thing.

By the way, I'm being sarcastic. We constantly argue about government power, and what things government should be able to do. Why give them the power to murder citizens, regardless of their crime? And talk to people in life imprisonment. People who have to live in repetitive boredom for decades, who often suffer with their guilt for their remaining days, and grow old knowing that they wasted their entire life. Killing them is going easy on them.

Also, to quote something that's quoted a lot:

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." Gandhi

Killing someone because they're a murderer makes about as much sense as elephant diapers.

But how does putting a kidnapper in jail make any more sense? The kidnapper held the victim against his will, as would prison hold him against his. For that matter, such a situation would arise for any punishment for any crime, as one could reduce both crime and punishment to acts of people placing other people in undesired situations.  The key difference, I say, is that, in the case of the criminal, they deserve their punishment, whereas their victim did not.  Hence, hypocrisy is avoided.

As satsifying that may sound, we have too many murderers(in the US) for that to work properly.

I am a firm believer to the clause "no cruel or unusual punishment." However there should be added another clause stating "no milder and laxer punishment." Since I also don't believe in Hell, whatever suffering they deserve should be done while they are alive.

That guy who raped and murdered the two thirteen year olds? Sodomized with a splintery broom and left to bleed to death.

I do punishment the GodOfWar_3ever sort of way... 76 viewings of Twilight

Against it... at least it the case of America.

It costs the government more then Life in prison...

So I don't really see the point.

I don't see death as any harsher a punishment then life in prison... prison is actually probably the crueler of the two.

Well the way it's handeled in the US is a problem unto itself. I'd be against it like that as well. The system needs to get itself worked out for it to work properly.
