Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 HDD format problem...

I'm trying to help my friend find the problem with his PS3 fat 60gb with bc. He has no idea about what happened but thinks his little brother may have had something to do with it. When the PS3 is turned on it says that the HDD has to be formatted and when we attempt to do it, it freezes at 1% right away and nothing happens. We have tried letting it sit there but it stays frozen. We switched out the HDD and we get the same issue. Anyone have an idea of what's wrong or needs to be fixed? Thanks

I'll take a flying leap in the dark here. possibly two.

1 both HDD's are defective (unlikely but possibe, try format them fully in a PC if you can)
2 the HDD encryption key on that PS3 has become stuffed somehow, might be worth letting Sony have a look at it.

other than maybe drop your PS3 or spike the power to it causing some form of trauma, I can't see how his little brother might have accomplished this feat.

does it let you get to the restore mode at all?
never tried it myself but you might want to give it a go

Proud Sony Rear Admiral

have u tried to reset the ps3 to factory settings first maybe that´ll fix it. by the way take a look on youtube and see how to start your ps3 in "safe mode" (don't know what it's called) and try there
good luck

u can wipe the hdd clean on a comp
