http://blogs.ft.com/techblog/2010/02/nintendo-warns-of-wii-shortages-through-march/

Shortages of the Nintendo Wii console will continue until the end of March in the US after the company was caught by surprise by December’s record sales.

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

and this isn't a surprise considering they cut production of the Wii right before record setting sales. This makes me wonder if they'll up production again as this is really hurting their sales potential.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

They should have expected more for the holidays

prior to the holiday season (and the months coming up to it) most people were expecting sales to be lower than 2008. I had predictions pretty much on par with 2008. Beating the US record by over 1m is a hard thing to predict especially when sales had eroded through most of 09.

I was hoping that the low supply meant that they were releasing a Black Wii.

It is such a twist of fate that the sales surged again just after they reduced production, though I'm sure they reduced production mid way through 09 as well.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

How bizarre to be back to the shortages game...

Bah!

Cutting Wii's production was a big mistake.

It wasn't selling brilliant in the first half of 2009 because of the lack of ground breaking titles.

Now people want one and can't find it.

Considering the constant stream of high-profile releases slated for this year, yeah, Nintendo really needs to make sure that the Wiis keep flowing.

I do not understand why they are so hard to find this far in.
