If 13 million per year is a crazy sell through, the expectations must be really low nowadays from Camp Sony.

what?

we are in a

a) RECESSION

B) the price of the PS3 just hit over christmas $299.00

and it's still only FEB of 2010, and the price of the PS3 is still $299.00

13 million for the year is just being realistic in my opinion.

Its still low expectations, when compared to a certain smaller console

And this has something to do with Sony saying they made their quota how?

I think many thought with the price before the slim which was at $399.00 still and that we were in a recession, that before the rumor's of the slim was more of maybe "this is indeed true" many had doubt's about the PS3 sales getting toi 13 million this year. march to march is their year for Sony.

and some think 13 Million system's are low, while that's their Opinion, I think 13 million is pretty big. number of system. to sell through

When did they announce the shipment though, for some reason I seem to think it was before the Slim and price cut was announced.

it was... and most people said

"they're crazy!!! .. unless they have a big price cut and maybe a slim coming"

oh look... thats exactly what happened.

selective memory from the OP and other posters here.

Yep, I thought that was the case but wanted someone just to clarify.

SCE made those projections based upon information they knew ahead of time before the general public did.

If the 13m projections had been for a $399 PS3, then yes, everyone would be absolutely right to think SCE's projections were unreasonable at the very least, peyote induced crazy fantasy at worst. But those projections were obviously made around a $299 hardware revision in time for the holiday season.

This is why many people who predicted a $299 slim knew it was coming when SCE released its annual projections. It was the only feasible way they could hit 13m.

As for these projections being low, everyone who believes this post a list of consoles that sold 13m in a year at $399 for the first half of the year, and $299 for the back half.

1. ...
2. ...
3. ...

My guess is there will be exactly one console on that list in about a month.

Secondly, for those who deliriously believe 13m/year is where the PS3 is going to peak, it must be based upon insider information that the PS3 will in fact be stopping production at $299, either because SCE plans to sell the console at that price for the next 7 years, or because SCE plans to exit the console business before they drop production costs/MSRP again.

The majority of total sales for any given console has been under $199 without fail since the inception of the console business. Does anyone actually think the 7th gen will be any different?

that's why I think we are just guessing right now because the systems's aside from the Wii, and the Xbox360 arcade are the only system's at that $199.00 price point, but as many on here stated the xbox360 arcade is not the best selling xbox360 in the market. out of all the xbox360 sku's.

so it's not even close to getting to peak year in my opinion until i think even after both Arch and Natal have been on the market a while, and a new upgraded Nintendo Wii hit's the market..

So if I go back, because I remember that news story, I will find these words.

I remember the words impossible used many times even after the Slim was released. Let me go to some digging.

We all said Sony was crazy.

this gen has been so different in every respect its not even funny.

That is putting it lightly. Mainly because Nintendo's budget (both from MSRP and production cost) offering converted into mass consumer gold.

But even the Wii will sell most of its units at the current $199 MSRP or lower when they do drop price again.

The PS3 will eventually see higher annual projections from SCE when they can feasibly sell them for $199.

We still don't have any definitive information on the SKU sales breakdowns for the 360 although you can loosely extrapolate based upon spikes in game sales that were holiday bundled with each respective SKU, before and after the bundles were available. Personally, I'm not convinced most of the SKUs even currently being sold are Arcades. But when production ends on the 360, I will be completely unsurprised if the majority of those sales were at $199 or less.

there will always be people who try to undermine and an achievement of any sorts by any console or company that is not their favorite....

who cares lol

all in all starting last year (apart from the psp GO) Sony has hit all the right notes and is heading towards even bigger sales than last year...good for them....I hope they keep delivering a solid performance all the way to the end...

I didn't think they were crazy. I just took it as fact that SCE had a hardware revision with reduced production costs that would allow them to sell it at $299.

As for predictions on how well a $299 PS3 would sell 6 months ago, that's a lot more subjective. Some, mostly going off their emotional hopes, predicted that a $299 price point wouldn't change anything in terms of demand. Not true. There's always going to be a bigger pool of consumers for a viable (one that's not for selective markets or lacking software support) $299 console vs. the same console at $399, which is not a mass consumer friendly price (neither is $299, but it's obtainable for most who prioritize AV/game equipment for entertainment).

And just to toss a hat in the ring, for those who don't think a $199 price point won't change the demand (and SCE annual sales projections) for the PS3 in another year or two (not making any guesses as to when; it happens when SCE can slash production costs low enough), I'm saying right now, it will.

I think the most sales' will come when the unit's hit $149.00 mainly because I think that is the rock bottom price that both Microsoft and Sony maybe Nintendo, With Nintendo I think it's more like $99.00 as the rock bottom price, even though I think the Wii is worth more than that.

I think they are going to take their time with this generation keep putting out value centric bundles to promote sale's over time moreso than they have in any other generatioin of game console's.

bigger harddrives, packed with more game's or new color's.etc

Lime Green Wii, PS3 or XBOX360 .anyone

Crazy?

Like 13 million is some sort of huge number?

A few of you people are confused by the OP and title of the thread. I don't mean 13 million is a insanely huge number I meant at the time it sounded a little far-fetched because the PS3 was selling so poorly.

At the time this was announced it was around September, so from April 1st to September the PS3 had sold 2.2 million consoles in 5 months (Selling an average of about 100K a week), so in the next 7 months it had to sell 11 million more, so you see were I'm getting at now?

Also we didn't know about the price or about the Slim at the time this was announced.

Not me, but I'm usually right on these things and 99% of you are dead wrong.
