Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do PS3s sell?

My whole point was to show that PS3 players are either waiting for that killer app, or they're using it as a Blu Ray player.

MotorStorm and Resistance ARE killer apps.

Have you even played them? My guess is you haven't... Seriously, it looks like some of you would still say "OMG IT HAS NO GOOD GAMES" even if those games received just 10s.

Motorstorm and Resistance are killer aps if the sell consols, if they doens't the are just great games. A killer app is a system seller, so far Resistance hasn't have a chance agains Wii Sport and Zelda combination with price or even xbox360 in USA. Of course Motorstorm combination with Resistance can be the thing that start pulling PS3 sales, we will hopefully see this on the next NPD.

People buy it because they know that Sony will never let them down.

I suppose these "people" never bought a CD from SONY/BMG that installed a Rootkit on their computer opening it up to hackers and sending information about your usage habits.

I suppose these "people" never bought a laptop from Apple/DELL/other companies that had exploding SONY batteries

I suppose these "people" never bought a Minidisc player, or a Betamax player, or another of SONY's failed formats

I suppose these "people" never had to import anything from Lik-Sang because it takes a year for games to make their way from the USA to other countries such as Australia.

I suppose these "people" never bought content from SONY that was encumbered by DRM and couldn't play in any media player.

I suppose these "people" have never been sued by SONY and their RIAA partners, or had their 10 year old daughters or dead parents sued.

I'm sorry, SONY has let me and many people down over and over again and finally they're seeing the backlash from treating their customers like shit for years. I and many others simply don't trust them any more and don't buy any more of their products, because I don't know what they will try next.

Of course, you're more than welcome to keep accepting their crap, it's just unfortunate that there are too many people who keep buying their stuff and they can justify their unlawful and unethical behaviour.

hmm why would sombody want the "new playstation" mabe it is because they loved the games that came out for their "old playstation" game properties like God of War,Grand Turismo,Rachet and Clank,Socom not to mention the other games that are definite on the Playtation 3 Metal  gear 4 Final Fantasy...or maybe because they  know just becase the "new playstation" will one day be the old playstation and won't just be a big paperwieght.ie  playstation/Playstation 2/X-box / Sega Saturn ...only  the playstation brand continues to support thier systems.so I am sure people do Want the "new Playstation"not because of blind loyalty but because what you get from the Playstation....not just at day 1 but all the way through till year 7-10

Yeah, Sony did/does all of that. Failed formats aren't punishing the consumer. If enough people suffered and bought into it, it would have succeeded. That's bad for Sony; I'm sure they didn't create the format with the intention of it failing.

As for DRM, well, movies companies never try that. Other Audio companies never try DRM. DRM may be a waste of time and it'll be better when they realize that fact, but attempting DRM prevents people from copying and they make more money.

Now, the main response I have is very simple: don't act like Nintendo and ESPECIALLY Microsoft are innocent. How many broken promises have been made by both companies? Microsoft created Windows by screwing over the guy that made DOS, so the whole company is founded on questionable morales. Microsoft is not exactly known for their trustfulness.  That's a nice list you created, but you could create a longer list of DRM and other issues with Microsoft.

I suppose you just don't buy consoles because no console manufactorer can be trusted.

Isn't that a partial definiton of Blind Loyalty? Buying a system without really knowing what you will get?

Nevermind in 7-10 years, what will you get next year? or the year after that... I mean everyone who buys a next gen console really has no idea what will happen.

First about the failed formats, I know SONY didn't make it fail on purpose, however, it still makes it difficult to trust them. They basically crippled every format they tried to push by closing it up and making it unusable.

Secondly, on DRM, "other people do it so it excuses me" is no excuse.  More and more music executives are realising that DRM is losing them money and hopefully Apple's recent move to provide some tracks without DRM will convince more people that it's a waste of money and no one want it. SONY, however, is a major pusher of DRM (just look at the rootkit fiasco, which I noticed you didn't try to respond to)

I never said anything about Nintendo and Microsoft. I was stating why SONY shouldn't be trusted. I agree that all three of the big three are untrustworthy, to differing amounts. Now, I refuse to buy any SONY products at all, and I try my best to avoid MS but it's quite difficult to do. I'm sure I could create a much larger list on Microsoft but that wasn't the point ;) As for Nintendo, yes, they have done a lot of things that I think are terrible practises but nothing compared to the other two.

In summary, I wasn't advocating never purchasing a product from a company that ever does anything single thing wrong. But SONY and yes, Microsoft are definitely not to be trusted.
