Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do PS3s sell?

Why do Nintendo fans always do the same? All fans list games they want, deal with it! FYI, they also do it prove to haters that the PS3 does indeed have games.

Sony/Playstation brand name strength no matter how hard MS tries to make it look bad. Why wait... serioulsy. why wait a year to save $100 if i can play games right now? theres plenty to keep busy with right now. Resistance COD3 Motorstorm F1 (some will love it, most popular racing sport in the world) Oblivion (like +60 hours) Tekken/VF5/FightNight pretty sure they can hold you of till Lair and Heavenly Sword.

Lol, I noticed. It is most likely a reaction to the claims that the PS3 is an will continue to be devoid of games. HappySqurriel the game was announced just not titled, just like the untitled naughty dog project which eventually got a game. :)

I think only early adopters buy a console "in anticipation" of games, and we're past that phase right now. If a console has to rely on future games for today's sales, I think its in trouble. Right now... There is a slow stream of games that is pushing people over the edge. But since the PS3 did create a fairly strong 2006 lineup, and got shelves well-stocked by Xmas... And since it has only had a couple noteworthy games since then, they simply aren't pushing very many people to that critical value mass right now. So basically, its people who were already willing to spend 600 bucks, were fairly interested in the launch lineup, and also were really impressed by some of the recent titles. There is also a customer who is ready to invest in a next-gen DVD format, and is pleased by the great Blu-Ray performance we've seen in the last few months. This is not a large group, but may be why attach rates are still so low in HD-ready Japan.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

umm, am i just weird, or do other people here know a lot of people who bought a 360 primarily for HALO 3, and secondarily for a couple of the games out now? I can think of a ton of those people. Why is this same sort of reasoning not realistic for the PS3?

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

i agree. it is the same reason why, had nintendo just done the same old boring standard thing like the other consoles (HD graphics and such) and still been the same cheap price, they would have easily lost to the plastation. sony has been leading for years, so if all the consoles follow the same standards (more or less) price wont make a sinificant difference in the buying of the consoles. basically its fanboys, although i dont want to be offensive, but its very much true. i have a friend in school, hes a sony fanboy, argued in favor of the PSP over DS and PS3 over wii until he finally got each of them. now, he openly admits to being a fanboy, says he will buy whatever sony product comes out in the future, but, for now, prefers the wii over the PS3 and DS over the PSP completely. all he talks about is getting a wii in the future, while his neglected PS3 sits at home collecting dust. guess what his background for his PSP is? a pic of a wii. no joke. i did not just make this person up. he truly exists just as i told of him. so yes, it is most all about brandname.

A delayed game is good someday, a bad game is bad forever.

I think that nobody is denying this scenario. But think of what you just said: they are buying it partly for a couple of games now. If all they were interested in was Halo 3 and didn't care about any current games, would they be ponying up $400 right now instead of waiting until Halo 3 comes out? I doubt it. Same with PS3. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have the money, really want to play MGS4/FFXIII/etc., and what the hey, right now they can play that other game, Resistance/Motorstorm/VF5/whatever that they also want. But if they care only about MGS4/other game that won't come out for a long time, why spend $600 RIGHT NOW for a glorified blu-ray player?

I hate to say it... but there is really no reason to buy a PS3 other than for BluRay. It is starting to get a nice setup of stuff you can download... But it still dont compare to 360. In terms of games, it dont compare to Wii or 360. The only reason you would buy one for games... is if your buying it for games that are comming. (why I did)

I think most people are buying them because "It's a new playstation". It's branding more than anything right now I beg to differ. I have seen on thise very forum people salivating for games on each system that hasn't come out yet. If you seen the video's online then maybe that is enough to know they are coming. How many here bought a wii for its launch games? Or a 360? Or a PS3? I know I didn't. For the Wii, I want to play the new mario and metroid. For the 260 I would love to see ninja gaiden two and halo 3. For the PS3 there are still many franchise I want to see like zone of the enders 3, mgs4 god of war 3, so forth and so on. People always buy consoles in anticipation.
i was planning to get wii only when it was readily available with games because i didnt want to wait in line. but since when i clicked circuit city's website the day of the launch and it was availalble with wii sports, and zelda, i bought it. if it didnt have any games, even if it was available on launch day, i wouldn't get it. same reason i didnt get ps3 cuz there's no games i want yet and i dont care about blueray/hddvd.

sounds like a friend i have. except he's a sony fanboy and will buy any game console sony comes out with but after getting the ps3 and playing it, he returned it and is now instead playing his friend's nintendo wii. reason why he returned is 1) he didnt see the innovation in gameplay instead of better graphics, and 2) he doesn't use blueray. he'll probably wait for some games he wants to get released first before he considers buying the ps3 again.
