Forums - Sales Discussion - Konami: There will be no clear winner in console war.

Source

"Could this be the first time in a console generation war where no one company and platform emerges as the dominant winner? Konami certainly believes so, insisting in a recent statement that none of the big three consoles of PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 will beat the others outright.

Japanese games publisher Konami, behind gems such as Silent Hill, and Metal Gear Solid, claims that the incredible dominance which the PS2 enjoyed last generation isn’t going to be repeated by anyone this time around. And they are probably right in this assessment."

oh theres no doubt no system will dominate by as much as ps2 did. it sold the most by 100 million. but without a doubt the wii will be the clear winner. but i'm starting to think the 360 is gonna easily beat the ps3 and while not be close to the wii it might hang not too far off nintendo for a while.

end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million,  360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million

Games I've beat recently: Super Mario Galaxy, Knights of the Old Republic, Shadow of the Collossus

Proud owner of wii, gamecube, xbox, ps2, dreamcast, n64, snes, genesis, 3DO, nes, atari, intellivision, unisonic tournament 2000, and gameboy

Agreed. No one will dominate globally like the PS1/PS2 did.

Wii will end up with about 50% of the current generation console sales. PS2 had about 70% of the previous generation

Let's just say that, between the Wii and the rest of the pack, I'm convinced it will be clearer than the 4th generation.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

Between Konami and John Lucas I will stick with John Lucas. Unless PS3 and 360 sell more than 100 m combined, there will be a clear winner.
Let me make a prediction: After this post, the thread will degenerate into a flamewar.

The Wii will undoubtedly win the hardware war and it probably won't be close.

The real question (and the one that copmanies like Konami care about) is whether the 360 can keep software sales close for the entirety of its life.

I fully expect the Wii to drive far ahead of the competition

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I expect that it will be more regional for 360 (North America) and PS3 (All Others)... But Wii will be equal in its market share around the world.

Winner? I think it is still too soon to predict.

Call me crazy, but I think it is still anyone's game to win this gen. MS and Sony are just a slim version away from massively boosting their sales if they can execute well enough. We have yet to have any real breakout software hits (aside from WiiSports and Halo which are kind of givens). I agree that Wii is certainly in the driver's seat at this point though, but Nintendo has a lot of pressure to continue to deliver incredible software and innovations because the Wii doesn't have traditional console selling features that the other systems have.

All 3 systems have pretty unique strengths that will allow them to compete long term against eachother. I think konami is 100% correct that it will be a close battle in most regions. I think Wii will win overall, but it will be more like 45-30-25 for the 3 companies in terms of worlwide marketshare. Sony has the hardest job to figure out how to make a profit on 25% marketshare :)

Imagine you're an executive in a major publisher and you have already invested $100+ Million on PS3 development under the assumption that it would be as dominant as the PS2; how willing are you going to be to admit to anyone (including yourself) that this decision was wrong and you may be risking the financial health of your company?
