Activision calls for console price cuts

As Morhaime eyes market opportunities from motion control innovations

Activision-Blizzard insists that the game industry can still grow despite the global economic gloom – just as long as the market sees more hardware price cuts.

Speaking at Activision-Blizzard’s earnings call, Blizzard president Michael Morhaime said that the more affordable consoles were key to improving the industry’s health.

“If you look at consoles, I think you are going to need to see hardware price declines given the economic uncertainties that we have,” he said.

Morhaime added that game studios need to take advantage of the potential presented in both Sony and Microsoft’s motion controllers.

“You are going to need to see product innovations,” he said. “And as you look at some of the new user interfaces that are coming out, I think those are certainly going to deliver some interesting product innovation.”

The Blizzard president went on to talk up digital product, saying it offers higher margin opportunities, adding that natural growth will occur naturally from expanding demographics.

Activision-Blizzard beat city expectations last night, reporting $4.28 billion GAAP net revenues for the 2009 calendar.

This is pretty stupid. Nobody is going to drop the price of their console just to make Activision happy so they can sell more games. Sony can't afford to, Nintendo doesn't need to, and MS is doing just fine even though they probably will drop the price soon.

Here they go again

Pretty damn arrogant, aren't they? They were lucky to get a break with modern warfare and now they act like they're running the show?

If i lose access to this profile as well....I'm done with this site.....You've been warned!!.....whoever you are...

Happy Wii60 user. Me and my family are a perfect example of where hardcore meets casual and together mutate into something awesome.

This is why I hate Activision...

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

It shalt be done because lord Activision says so!!!!

....Yeah right.

more like they should bring the price of their over priced stupid games down!!!

This attitude is what led me to shit list MW2 and any future products they release. I just pray MAG kicks off well. So far I know at least 5 other MW2 fans who have switched to MAG and if 360 gets something similar, MW2 can kiss their lame ass regurgitating franchise good bye :D

Here is praying for a successsful COD free future!

Wasn't it mentioned on here that the PS3 slim just recently started to break even on each unit (or at least they are close to doing so?) If so, that must mean the 360 Elite is pretty profitable (no Blu-Ray drive, no Cell, no Wi-Fi, you get the idea) right now. That suggests that an Elite price cut to $250 soon maybe wouldn't be out of the question. But with the rumor being that NATAL will be bundled with the 360, I don't think a price cut will happen. They'll just slot in NATAL with the Elite Sku and that's it. As for the PS3, there's no point in them cutting the price right now even if they reached the break even point. Both MS and Sony have the third-party support they need so it just doesn't make any sense to forego profits for more marketshare. Building market share is important in the beginning and when you don't have the third-party support. (if you want to see what happens when you don't win over third-party support right away... look at N64, PS3 or pre-DS Lite DS when it was getting its ass kicked by PSP in NA at the beginning) But if you do, there's no point aside from winning a e-peen console war for fanboys on internet forums.

Fuck off activision.

I should expand, activision seem to be the only company geared by getting profits, fuck game quality and consumers, it's money money money as far as they're concerned.
