My God... I can't believe people are still DOS'ing you.

I wonder who is doing it - lame fucks.

What's a DOS....I guess it is some kind of internet attack, but it doesn't sound like a virus....what does it do?

Denial Of Service

In short, you try to bring the server down by sending many requests to the server at the same time. E.g. using thousands of bots (virus infected computers) which all request the vgchartz.com website at lets say Thursday 12.40 pm. The server tries to answer all the requests but cannot cope with so many at one time and thus goes down...

@lingling/anyone else interested

what you actually described is a DDOS attack or Distributed Denial Of Service attack. A DOS attack is the same, but only 1 computer is doing the attack. They don't really even have to request the website, as you can request other things too (like ping replies), but requesting certain parts of this website would cause the greatest load on the server.

DOS attacks used to work until the developers smartened up and refuse connections from the same IP/mac address that come to quickly. To get around that problem, you make thousands of different computers attack the same source at the same time, thus causing the server to try and handle all the requests. Since the IP addresses are different, the server doesn't know which IPs to ignore and which are legitimate users.

Once again I have to thank you for all the work you put in. Good luck dealing with these gnats. This is just another way where small people try to feel big by trying to wreck community property. It's like punk kids pissing on a merry-go-round at the park.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

Hmm maybe the things "attacking" the site are bots (search robots?) or people trying to parse the database, or or or? Would like to look at those logfiles.

ioi, what most of the time helps if somebody attacks a site is to ban IP who makes several accesses on the site (lets say 10) without any referrer or external referer. Those are most likley people attacking the site with HTTP request (if the problems are to many HTTP requests)

a DOS attack on a website is generally pretty useless, unless it's a DDOS, since it's difficult to generate enough traffic from one place.

It is possible to take up all server connections, by sending a whole lot of TCP SYN packets without replying to the response.

On Topic: Fantastic news, I'm glad to see this is being worked out. I hope this site gets back on its feet as soon as possible =)

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

And if you fake random IP addresses you are able to take a lot of servers down, if you want to.

god the internet is shitty really...i blame video games!
