Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Muramasa: The Demon Blade: The Most Underrated RPG This Gen?

It has more in common with Super Paper Mario than it does Contra... and guess what Nintendo calls SPM?

Super Paper Mario is more a platformer than a RPG, and Muramasa is not as close to being a RPG as even Super Paper Mario.

I think the comparison between muramasa and NMH is pretty good tbh.

I felt the story was much better, the locations more varied and the combat more satisfying in NMH

I'll get it eventually, not worth full price to me. Just hope the price doesn't go up.

I ended up getting it (found it new for $23) and I've played through Momohime's story on normal (easy) with a good start on Kisuke's on the harder difficulty. I gotta say I really love the game. I can see why some would say it's repetitive but its so much fun I don't care. You are getting new blades all the time so if nothing else there's constantly new abilities to try out. You're constantly leveling. The grind that I hate so much is taken out of the RPG that I'm consistently falling for. I don't think the backtracking is as bad as people make it seem. Occasionally you'll have to traverse maybe 5-8 screens, each screen only takes 10 sec to run through, you'll see some enemies on 1 in 3 screens I'd say. It would be nice if the story was more accessible to a western audience but I think part of it's charm are it's mysteries. (Although Odin Sphere seemed alright in that area)

It's an action RPG, the main focus it's the combat, but you increase levels, improving your life bar and strenght.
It's a great game, I finished the first story and started the second one, I am also trying to find all the swords of the game.

you do the same in Okami and Okami is considered to be an action-adventure like Zelda

Nah that belongs to Valkyria Chronicles and then it's going to FFXIII

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

First off, I'm a massive fan of this game. Heck, I had a banner of it in my signature for over a year before and after it released.

Having said that, do I think its the most overlooked RPG? Not really. First off, its not even a true RPG. Its more of a side scrolling action/RPG hybrid, along the same lines as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, just with a lot more focus on combat and a lot more attention to detail. If anything, its RPG characteristics are the background to the action and the main developer, George Kamitani, agrees.

Second of all, the game actually did quite well with next to no marketing and on a system known for third party games 'selling bad'. By the end of its run, it'll probably sell a good 300,000 units or more. Hopefully even more due to Nintendo recently releasing the game at 'platinum' status in Japan (a special discount price for games aimed at the 'core' gamer).

As for what RPGs are overlooked, if anything, I'd say some other RPGs are more overlooked. Such as, at least in the west, stuff like the Dragon Quest titles or Fire Emblem. But again, at least in the case of Dragon Quest, this can be attributed to the fact that the games receive no marketing whatsoever and people are looking elsewhere for their RPG fix. As for Muramasa being overlooked however, it got way more media attention than most Wii games and did much better than most people could imagine given its marketing budget (ie: none) and the type of game it is (Japanese focused action game with Anime styled cutscenes).
