Forums - Website Topics - Why you can't determine what the fanbase ratio is of members through polls

360 fans theory about fanbase has always been a weak argument. The most they could prove with the evidence they were providing was that more votes went for ps3 games.

You cant prove...

A. what fanbase was voting for them. I own a Wii... and strictly a wii... yet I vote for Ps3 games. Why? Two reasons. 1. because the polls are pointless but its funny to see people put so much stock in them. And when the poll actually interests me (like the one on the front page) MY tastes and MY opinion is what I vote for. I voted for WKC on the front page. Doesn't mean I think its better than ME2 it just means I'm more interested

B. how many unique people were voting for them... easy to grasp really... each day your allowed a new vote. Just because one option has more votes doesn't mean that more people voted for it. On top of each computer being allowed a vote... I could get up to 4 votes a day if I really felt like skewing a poll... But I only have 1 'puter connected to the Internet and I can't be bothered to hook the others up over something so silly.

C. what percentage of voters were of members compared to lurkers... another easy concept... the polls are open to non users also. Even if we ignore every other reason we still would not be able to determine what the member ratio i because of lurkers. Unless there was a way to determine which the lurker to member ratio of votes... which we cant.

D. what % of members of a certain fanbase vote. Who's saying that EVERY single member is voting in these silly polls? Just because a poll is showing favor to a certain side doesn't mean its because every single member voted. EX: each fanbase has 100 members but fanbase A has 60% of their members vote while fanbase B has 30% of theirs vote... obviously the results would look lopsided even though if 100% of each voted it'd be a tie

E. The way people interpret polls. Each person will interpret the polls differently. Like "Who do you think has the better line up in blah blah blah" Just because Halo, Fable, and Gears of War all massive games are going up against Heavy Rain, MAG, and WKC all minor games doesn't mean every ones taste is going to automatically going to go to the more acclaimed games. Ex: Halo is bigger than MAG but Zipper has a cult following. Fable is bigger than WKC but not everyone enjoys WRPGs and Gears of War is bigger than Heavy Rain but some people might not like the roided space marine art direction.

Now quit wining ant talk about games instead of how unfair everything is.

Polls is just one of many ways to figure out the fanbase ratio on this site, just try sticking around the forums and you'll soon find out rough percentages.

Oh and you come across as a PS3 fan IMO.

Care to explain this then?

So the PS3 is a wii?

Former something....

You can draw some conclusions from the poll results though.

Anyway, they correlate well with the game ownership. Just look at the big multiplatform games indiviudal pages and you will find out that the PS3 version usually has a lot more owners than the X360 version, on average I'd estimate the ratio is 1 to 1.75 in favor of PS3.

Example Assassins Creed II: PS3 owners 187, X360 owners: 105

Important: Notice though that the amount of Sony fans will be even higher than that ratio because there's people who own PS2 and PSP, plus cos of the high entry price of PS3 many Sony biased ppl might have not picked up one yet.

And even more important: many X360 owners are what you could call 'self haters'. PS3 owners are more hardcore in favoring Sony, than X360 owners is favoring Xbox. So a thorough analysis must be made to understand all these stats.

Everybody who vistits this site frequently should know that Xbox fans are in the minority.

And apparantly you didn't even bother to look at most polls. Many of them are just silly and they don't represent the industry at all.

I notice I nitpick a lot in people's posts, but I can't just sit idly by at this. Sorry.

It is my understanding, as explained by TalonMan, that polls are tied to IP adresses, and not to days and computers. You can post once per IP. That's it. In any likelyhood you have a dynamic IP that changes once in a while. It usually doesn't change while you are using it, but you turn off your computer at night or when not using it and when you turn it back on you have a new IP. And can vote in the same poll again. It is also likely (though much less so) that you are connected to the internet through a router, and then it is usually so that all your computers share the same IP.

Anyway, this part of your post is wrong, if my understanding is correct, and should be deleted.
