I absolutely agree, Sonic wouldn't fit in there at all. N is well known for constructing their games around gameplay mechanics, not characters. Sonic demands completely different level designs, physics, pacing...
I remember people calling the Manta Ray and Balance Ball sections of SMG "gimmicky" - well, this would be the mother of all gimmickry.

I hope this is a joke.

I don't want at all Sonic in a pure Mario Platform game. Not only Sonic is nothing special and does not fit at all, but it make 0 business sense as Sonic is not popular compared to Mario.

It would be an epic error and I don't think Nintendo is idiot.
