From gaf:

the method of reporting hardware and software unit sales has been changed from production shipments (b) to recorded sales (a)

What does this mean.  Since it would be highly inaccurate for financial reporting to change to sold through to consumers I dont believe that is what it means.  Did Sony return to recording sales once items are produced and shipped to Sony warehouses even though they have not yet been ordered by retailers?

If you called up Sony and said "Yo Kaz! I gots the hots for some of the product, yo. I got the cash and ima deal myself some PS3s, get the drug out on the street, yo. Give me 500,000 units of your best."

Thats a recorded sale, if they can reasonably expect that you'd pay it. So even if they haven't got any PS3s in warehouses, on boats, in stores but they can reasonably expect to fulfill this order they can have more sales than stock on hand. Even if you can't find a single PS3 in your entire country, they could still have say 5M 'sold' and on the way. Shortages don't prove anything, all that means is the retailers are making extra large orders to restock (which count as sold on the books) and Sony will deliver when they can.

Bottomline, we can all agree on is that PS3 is most definitely undertracked.

Why?  Apparently when the Sony exec said they sold 31 million consoles they meant sellthrough.

2.5 million PS3's isn't THAT hard to believe out there.

That guy is so WRONG on many levels.

"I mean, we've got 31 million [units sold] worldwide right now - they've got 39 million [units sold]. I don't even need to go out 10 years," he quipped.

1.) He compares PS3 numbers by the end of January 2010 with x360 numbers by the of December 2009.

2.) He compares PS3 numbers sold to consumer with x360 numbers shipped to retailers.

3.) This would mean, that PS3 sales by the end of December 2009 are : 31m(from that guy) - 906k(VGC PS3 WW January sales) = 30.1m with 3.42m still sitting at retailers, which is totally ridiculous.

The only conclusion, his numbers are OUTDATED.

1) So? 2) yes he mistooke what the 360 numbers were. 3) No it doesn't... there is always produtt in shipment. Consoles are shipped via sea. Heck some of the amount listed may still not even be in stores.

Funny how every store i have been in was out of PS3 yet had stacks of 360s.

But million of PS3 are in shipments lol. They don't produce them fast enough for there to be that many on boats.

This difference in shipped/shipping and sold isnt anywhere near as serious as people think:

The PS3 has sold 1.2m, averaging 300k per week since the end of 2009.

The 360 has sold 0.81m averaging 202k per week since the end of 2009.

The PS3 shipped v VGC is around 2.8m or 9 weeks stock

The 360 shiped v VGC is around 1.9m or 9 weeks stock

Is this hard to believe still?

How does what happened in January have anything to do with a 3 million shipped/sold difference at the end of December?  Not a chance there was 3 million on retail shelves at the end of December.

I dont think sony have developed a system of teleporting boxes of ps3's to shelves yet.... they sit on cargo ships, in trucks, in warehouses and on shelves.  Try thinking a little before posting... and what happend in january has everything to do with it.... obviously.

So you want people to believe that there is only a 5.2 million difference between 360 and PS3 in shipped but 5.9 million difference in sold numbers?  Really??  When PS3 are much harder to find.  Try taking off the 360 colored glasses and use your brain.

if ps3 has sold 33.5 million how comes vgchartz sales are 31million?

this might of already been brought up im just too lazy to go through all the threads pages?

sick of whining ps3 fans over sales...... go speak to site admins about it if you have a problem. I'm sure they will put you straight.

The numbers don't lie, no matter who is trying to justify it.

Just shows they are quick to adjust down yet when proof goes the other way yahh.

If the numbers dont lie then why are you trying to justify them upwards? accept the number the site has since ioi has spoken on the mutter or find a weekly numbers site that agrees with what you wish the numbers to be.
